    Need Help for Floyd

The back history is that Floyd had three mast cell tumors in 2005. Two at once in the groin area and then another 12 days later in the shoulder. . I put him on prednisone for four months when he got the third. Since then I've learned a lot about diet. He was never, since adoption, been on a bad diet, but some are good and others better. He got almost four years of remission.

In October, he had new mast cell tumors and several new lipomas that came up within a one week period. He had two lipomas from the previous four years that were not large. We took them all out. We put him back on prednisone, although not a very large dose. He's also getting Milk Thistle and Standard Process.

A month later, he had huge digestive upsets to the point where he became dehydrated. We did blood/urine work at that time, and it looks great except for dehydration. Kidney and liver were absolutely fine.  A one week course of Flagyl. Within hours of getting the Flagyl, he was fine and starving, vs. for the first time in my life, I've had to force a pill. A week after quitting, it came back, and we did another course of Flagyl. It came back exactly a week later. Not as badly, but far from normal. Lab results for  fecal are normal.

I'm sort of thinking that he had a major immune upheaval although I don't know why. Over the previous four years, I've done Monica Segal diets, and developed severa to keep variety for him and keep myself on budgetl. It's not all that hard for a larger dog that has always been a heavy eater. He eats about 2700 calories per day for a 65 lb dog. Always has.

So for now, Floyd's on an elimination diet of bass and millet. I can try adding vitamins to make this complete or try a fish based kibble.

    Thanks for thinking of us.

Does your vet use TCVM?  There are some awesome Chinese herbs that help diarreha and stomach upset in a bit away.  Also to help reduce bacteria in the gut.

A couple of things come to mind regarding the Prednisone.  When you say "digestive upset" do you mean he was vomiting or he had diarrhea or both??  Prednisone is very hard on the stomach and should be taken with a stomach protectant.  Willow took Pepsid.  But, there are other things too.

Also, if he's still getting the milk thistle, try stopping that.  Especially, since his liver/kidneys are fine.  Willow didn't tolerate it well at times.

Also, if you add vitamins it's not going to be an elimination diet any more.  Willow had really good results with Forti Flora to help get her system back to normal.

Thanks you guys. Floyd is giving me grey hair.

I wasn't too thrilled with the vet we saw, so am waiting for an appointment with another vet. The vet I'd previously used isn't with that clinic and I can't find her.  I did start him on Thorne Gastroplex and a probiotic, and took away the milk thistle, but kept the Standard Process. My regular vet doesn't want him on Pepcid or Tagamet. We tried reducing the Prednisone and the problems worsened, so for now, he'll stay on 30 mgs every other day. (65 lb dog)

He seems to be doing a bit better. Stool quantity is normal and there's no blood, just still loose and with mucous.  I've added some coconut oil for some badly needed calories with no worsening.

Although it's not a "true" elimination diet of going weeks on the two sources, within a few days, I can tell if stool quality has decreased or has improved.

    Hope Floyd gets better soon.

That sounds like an awefull large amount of pred to be on without some sort of stomach protectant.  Does he at least get the medicine with food?  The probiotic also sounds like a good idea.  If it were me I'ld keep on with the milk thistle.  The stuff works wonders.

Give the boy some hugs for me.

Why on earth take him off milk thistle with THAT kind of prednisone??  That's kinda crazy.  It doesn't help to find an allergen if it kills his kidneys and liver!
