    We has a bug! (jennie_c_d)

Unfortunately, I'm not just being cute.

Here's the story. Emma, Ena, and I went to a four day dog show over the weekend. We were gone Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Jewel stayed with my Mom. We stayed in a friend's travel trailer. She brought three of her youngest dogs. It was their first trip away, thier schedule was completely off, and they were getting a lot more treats than usual. They all got upset stomachs, and we attributed it to stress tummy.

Now, it's spreading. Oh, joy. Emma had loose stools, this morning. No big deal, she does that sometimes. This afternoon, Ena Bean had a gooey stool. Again, no big deal. This evening, after obedience class, Jewel (who is recovering from a bruised leg, that she got playing too rough) had disturbing diahrrea on my very wonderful Coach coat. This was in my car, so I'm glad it didn't hit the upholstry, but I certainly hope it comes out of my khaki coat. My friend's dogs are also falling like flies, so... we have a bug. It hasn't affected anyone seriously enough to warrant a vet visit, yet, though we both have seniors and she has young puppies.

I gave everybody tripe, for dinner, and Jewel got some pectin. Of course, pushing fluids. If I need something stronger for Jewel, anybody know whether Immodium is ok for sighthounds? The IG club only lists barbituates as an issue. I wouldn't give it to Emma without calling the vet, of course, with her being on medications, already. Jewel is basically healthy, just has diahrrea, LOL.

    Sounds like * SHOW CRUD*.

Will *try *to look up what to do and get back... am whelping a litter so it may take awhile.

If not back soon, just Google *show crud*.

    • Gold Top Dog

It doesn't seem like show crud, from the descriptions I'm seeing. Maybe a MUCH milder version. The first affected dogs are already over it. I'm thinking it's a short lived virus. If I had some Cephalexin, I'd give it, but all I've got is Clavamox. Totally not the same.

Good luck with the puppies! Post some pictures, when you're doneBig Smile

I tend to stick with Pepto Bismol (I can't take immodium so I cringe at giving it to the dogs).  It has a tiny bit of anti-inflammatory in it but it's milder than the Immodium.  If you use the caplets you can break them in half (I like that it's adjustable like that too)

    • Gold Top Dog

I have some liquid Pepto, but was told not to give it to Emma (who is on seizure meds and NSAIDs, and can't have Immodium, either, and has a very touchy tummy, and Pepto could make it bleed?). How much can a 14 lb dog have? I may give her some in the morning.

What about probiotics and pumpkin?  That's my go to solution.

Where was the show?  We have an agility trial on the 19/20 of this month in Western NC - hopefully we're out of the area for this gunk.

Rest the gut for 24 hours.  Then, boiled chicken and rice (more rice than chicken, in a ratio of about 2:1).  With your vet's permission, you could give pedialyte to prevent dehydration.  But, I usually just let my dogs lick ice cubes.

It was in Savannah, Ga.  Ena Bean woke me up in the night to potty, then had some more yucky poops this morning. *sigh* I suppose fasting them is a pretty good idea. Chicken and rice won't work at all, though, LOL. I'll have to come up with a different bland diet, for them. Beef and potato, maybe.

Sorry not to have gotten back earlier.   LONG delivery, one pup stuck which took quite awhile before I was finally be able to grab the back legs to pull out.

Then... my son's GF rolled his Envoy this AM while on her way to her praticum.( nurse)

She hit a patch of black ice and spun out, a 360 in one direction, then a 180 in the other direction, to finally flip over in the middle of the road.

Rushed out there to find that she was the fourth vehicle( all one after another) to have flipped, rolled, spun-out within a 1/4 mile of highway.  No salt or sand on the road...

Ambulances, cop cars, flashing lights, tow trucks... and all this at 6:45AM.  What a day !! Tongue Tied

She is fine, the truck... not so much ! Indifferent

Anyway, I hope the dogs are getting better... I haven't even had 10 minutes to myself to research show crud remedies.

BTW... Mom finished up with 5 pups, but there is an itsy, bitsy little guy that I'm not sure will make it, so have been supplementing him today as well.

Having the poopies really sucks!  I usually give my dogs a combo of pure pumkin (few tablespoons mixed with their food) and FortiFlora for a few days and this usually does the trick.  When it doesn't I'll go to the fasting then bland foods.  One of these usually helps cause like you it seems when one gets it the rest are usually sure to follow.  Have also had luck with pepto and Kaopeptake (sp?).

It seems everytime I give Tessy (aiha fighter) cephalexin her poop gets super firm and much darker but once she comes off it the poop softens up considerably.

Hope you get it cleared up soon.

Jennie, hope the dogs feel better soon.

I use Immodium but Willow's much heavier than your kids.  I also use Forti Flora if needed like Johnny mentioned.

If you've got z/d on hand they could probably all get that for a bland diet for a day or two--if they are able to eat it with the other medical issues.

I forgot that I have BLAND kibble, right here! And cans! Woohoo! Emma's diet is extremely bland, and easy on the tummy. That's one of the reasons she eats it. Thanks, Lori.

Jewel refused dinner, tonight. I will offer her some Z/D in the morning. Usually, they'll eat Z/D before they'll eat anything else. It smells SO good!

    • Gold Top Dog
    Z/D *does* smell good!

When Pirate needs bland, I do a little bit of smashed potatoes and an egg, with a teensy bit of garlic for flavor. But I don't think Emma can have eggies, right?

I hope they feel better soon.

    • Gold Top Dog

Emma can have Z/D, LOL. No eggies, no chicken, no rice. She can eat beef and corn, though! Go figure. She can have white potato, for bland, but the canned Z/D is probably just as good. She can have fish, but Ena won't eat it. They are a ridiculous bunch of dogs.

Special, Jennie. They are just 'special'.
