does anyone know the signs of a dog with diabetes?

I know two signs are excessive water intake and weightloss both of which my Abby has. She will drink gallons of water at a time and at first I was thinking well she plays more than other dogs so that might be why but in the 4 months I've had her she's never stopped drink a ton of water at a time even when she is being lazy she will drink more than the others when they are playing vigoriously. Plus there for a while she refused to eat when I first brought her home though now she eats as much if not more than the others but has lost a ton of weight. My vet is closed right now but I will be calling first thing in the morning.

Excessive thirst and urination, constant hunger with weight loss - those are some symptoms. Google it and you'll get loads of information.

If you want to know right now, you can use a regular blood glucose monitor from the pharmacy to test his blood sugar. I have a diabetic cat and that is what I use. It is accurate. It doesn't hurt them. It does help save their life if they are diabetic and having insulin shots. Feline diabetes is different from humans and dogs (which are similar), but blood testing is blood testing. We use the cats ear. Put rice in a sock, heat in microwave, hold on ear till warm, then test away. You can also use their foot pad. I've heard of using the side of their lip, but the ears and feet are much easier. They sell a glucometer specially for pets, but the test strips are only available from a vet and much more expensive than those for a human glucometer.

Vet check up is in order though. Good luck!

Yes, get bloodwork (a pretty thorough one -- you don't want to miss something more complicated)

    Also get a urinalysis done.

And is there any history of steroid use?  (allergy dog?)

I honestly don't know a lot about her history other than her previous owner wanted to put her to sleep because she was more hyper at 10 months than her 14 year old golden retriever was before it died (Abby is also a golden retriever). But obviously I took her home instead but she doesn't have any allergies not that I can tell atleast my other golden is the one with allergies. I've got another hour or so before my vets opens.

Ok so some kinda good news. I called her vet and the assiant answered (she calls herself the pet nurse) who has dealt with Bianica for the past 5 years so we have a pretty good relationship (she also came in on her day off when I got Abby so she could meet the new pet) And she says that since Abby has only lost 2 pounds, even though it looks like more, not to worry about diabetes since Abby is just as hyper as when I brought her home. But she wants me to try a dewormer with her and that that's more than likely whats caused the weight loss but the excess water intake could just be her.
