Skin and Coat Supplements?? %#@&^!! Help

My vet recommended to give my dog to improve his skin (very dry, flaky, some hair loss) the brabd he recommended did not have geart reviews on the Petsmart web site.

In seach for the right supplements I am lost in the sea of information that is the internet, there is so much out there, I would like to know what real people are using, so please share your experience and knowledge on what works best.

    thanks!!

First you should start with food. What type of food are you currently feeding?

After you get your dog on the right food, then work in some supplements.

When one of my aussie rescues came to me she had super dry, flaky skin and she was very itchy. I switched her food and within a few weeks her skin was all cleared up. No more flaky, dry itchy skin. Now she has a very healthy, shiney coat.

I agree; your dog's food should have a named meat or meat meal (like chicken, lamb, etc.) as the first ingredient. It should also have a good amount of omega 3's, and I like a food with a fair amount of fat too.  Since Jessie's been on home cooked her coat is doing better than ever; soft, full, and shiny, and her food is about 40% fat ( 22% dry matter basis to compare it to kibble).

For a skin and coat supplement, many members here swear by wild salmon oil.

I just switched him to Science Diet Lamb and Rice, before he was on the original recepie. It has been about a month. I have noticed a little change mainly in his poo it looks normal. before is was very slimy.

I think you can do better than SD. JMO. I give salmon oil and vitamin e daily and Tootsies coat is to die for.

I think a different food would help, and salmon oil/vitamin E are always good additions. My Aussie and pointer get Missing Link for skin/coat and their coats are very healthy and glossy.

What other food brands  would you suggest?

Don't think you can beat salmon oil.  A friend on another dog group swears by coconut oil for this purpose, too.  Haven't tried it myself though.

We had a dog with allergies and skin/coat problems.  We had a lot of improvement by switching his food to something that had very few ingredients so we could limit his exposure to things that might give him the "itchies," hot spots, etc.  Two brands we had good luck with were California Natural and Wellness.  You have to get them at specialty stores - they're not typically at grocery stores, for example.

The other thing that really helped were Essential Fatty Acid supplements (containing marine lipids, flax seed oil, Vitamin E, and other ingredients).  We ordered the capsules from Animal Essentials and had them shipped to us, but you could probably find something similar in the same type of stores that sell the better quality foods.
