We're not even sure it's a hot spot at this point. The ointment the vet originally prescribed made him break out in pustules and the area looked even worse. So now we've stopped that and put him on an oral antibiotic. It seems to be drying out and healing up now. Wish I could figure out what started it. Only thing I can connect it with was the Frontline I applied which made him itchy all over (or seemed to) and he found that one spot to really work at. But the spot where I put the Frontline showed no irritation at all, so I can't be 100% sure it was that either. Very frustrating because now I'm not sure what to do about flea/tick prevention and he'll be due for another dose in about a week. For now, the vet said leave his skin alone and don't irritate it (no bath, no brushing, etc.) until we're sure what this is.
