Thank you I have not decided yet but thinking really hard racking my brains right now on what to do.  Daisy is 12yrs old, has a heart murmur and I have to get information on the removal  of both eyes I'm sure they will knock her out for this forgot the word sorry lol but now I am thinking what if she doesn't wake up I don't know really thinking the worst right now but I don't want to think on it for to long. I guess it was wishful thinking last night I was sitting on the couch and had a plate in my had I didn't make any sound and I wasn't near Daisy's face and I was moving the plate around and it seemed as if she was following the plate which got me thinking well maybe she can see just a little out of that eye like I said wishful thinking on my part. :(

Thank you everyone for your opinions

I can't tell you what to do, since you know your dog best.  But, just to offer some support, since either way it looks as though she will permanently lose her sight, this book might help you a LOT to give Daisy the best possible quality of life:

Hi -- this thread is like 3 years old -- I will see if I can get hold of her and have her post for you -- she DID have the surgery done for this dog and the dog is still doing ok I think.

my dog Gia is acting the same way. The light is painful, she barely eats or moves. I understood that glaucoma is painful and causes migraines which accounts for her lethargic state. I dont know if i will have her eyes removed. I am going to the doctor soon. I dont know what i will do because meds dont work long term and eye removal seems to be the last and only real treatment. I am so crushed We have a german shepard. Sorry for your dogs problems jeannie

My dog had sudden blindness. She is on drops and meds non of which helped really. The final choice is to remove her eyes and have a blind german shepard. I am trying to decide what her life will be like given she is a guard dog first. I have only a few days because she is in pain. I hope daisy is better. Jrl

Hi...I know the thread is old, but you are new and have a problem to deal with.

My dog gradually went blind, but then an issue came up (prolapsed iris) for which we had to remove one eye.  She is MUCH better, and it really doesn't look all that bad!

Dogs do adjust to blindness fairly easily and compensate with their sense of smell, touch and hearing.  Java (mixed breed) was not a guard dog as such, but her nature is to be very protective.  She is still the first of my 2 dogs to hear something out of the ordinary and start barking.

Hope this helps a little bit for you...

I decided today to remove the first eye on thursday and see how she adjusts and when she goes blind in the second eye i will have some experience with her. Thanks for responding

One of my dogs was blind AND deaf the last few years of her life.  She did fine - could find her beds, her water, and the other dogs!  You may want to read this: http://www.petcarebooks.com/books/living_blind.htm

I have had blind dogs and I have had deaf dogs.  In honesty, vision is a dog's weakest sense anyway -- their sense of smell and even hearing is so much more intense than the vision (particularly day vision is really not nearly as good as we humans generally assume it is).

You will find (particularly if you work with her) that the nose becomes even MORE important.  It's a sense that never really dims much (altho both sight and hearing can).  Taking it a step at a time is such a good attitude -- and honestly the folks on this board are really good at being good support.

Hi sorry I didn't respond sooner, it cost $600 to remove both of Daisy's eyes, it was the best choice for her I waited like a year to do it because of me not wanting to see my dog without eyes even tho the vet and others on the forum especially callie who helped me finally make the decision. I paid lots of money for the pills and eye drops to try and save her sight but again that was my fault because I didn't think I could see Daisy with no eyes.

Daisy had her eyes removed in 2009 it's been 3 years now she has her moments of hitting the walls where she just stands in one spot, I tend to be a little crazy and wanna rush to the vet to make sure she's fine which she is. I did notice that her days and nights changed she sleeps more in the day and at night she's up, Daisy paces which can drive you crazy at times but I also think she does it because she knows I will give her a boney. Daisy has always been independent and WITCHY ( with a capital B ) lol but I wouldn't change her for anything.

Since you only got one eye done I would suggest to keep having her pressure taken in the eye that is left because she might still be having high pressures even if the eye looks good. For Daisy it was mostly one eye as well but it got worse as time went on, before I had her eyes removed I had them check everything on her had her blood work all done because she at the time was few weeks from turning 13 yrs old and I didn't want to put her threw surgery incase she had other problems.

Daisy blood work was great for a dog her age. Like I said it's been 3 years and friday 29th Daisy will be 15 yrs old Smile  Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the opinions and well wishes. I will be making Daisy a cake again lol & Lucky as well since her birthday was in may and she had treats but she'll get a cake on the 29th as well.

I wish you luck Jlac sending lots of good vibes to you and Gia will do fine. My nieces name is Gia :)
