Canine Vestibular Disease

Good Morning~ My seven year old Golden Retriever, Chester, was recently diagnosed with Hypothyroid.  We started him on Soloxine 3 weeks ago.  Then two weeks ago after returning from vacation, the poor guy was diagnosed with Canine Vestibular Disease.  We had a couple of tramatic days when we didn't know what was going on with our furry child. Is anyone familiar with Vestibular?  He has gotten his personality back but is still having some problems with balance, especially when he gets up quickly or is running outside and turns too fast.  He also still has a little bit of the head tilt.  How long did it take your dog to get his/her balance back completely?  I have heard several different time frames....anywhere from two to six weeks.  And if it doesn't improve during this timeframe it could be some other underlying condition. You can email me direct at cmeyer@burkwald.com.  Thanks for you help. Chris,
Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear about your dog. Since we've changed to this new format I didn't want to send you searching the old format and went a head and got you some old threads with some pretty good reading.
Hope it helps, keep us posted

Oh gosh, am sorry to hear this.  My old cocker had this condition and it's just not fun.  He would walk and walk and walk in circles until I interrupted him.  I'm thinking it took Rusty 2-3 weeks each time he had an episode to get back to himself.  There is no quick fix for this, it just has to basically run it's annoying course.  Belly rubs to your baby.  And welcome to idog.

The head tilt can become habit -- You might try massage on the neck to help that.  That helped Foxy's a great deal.

The thing that vets always worry about is a tumor -- a brain tumor can mimic vestibular.  Vets don't even like to mention it because it can freak you and I out so much. *sigh* (been there, trust me!)

Foxy found a ton of relief when I'd massage his neck (and he had some spondylosis in the lower back too).  Try just plain old 'green alcohol' (plain rubbing alcohol with wintergreen in it) .... or you can get peppermint or wintergreen essential oil and try it -- just a couple of drops and massage it in.

Imagine how 'tight' YOUR neck would get if it was 'tilted' all the time -- the muscles on the short side are tense and strained, and the ones on the long side are tired and weak.  You don't have to use much oil -- just a drop or two.  But it's a great relaxing time for both of you!!

Hi All!

I hope someone can help my Lady Bug and I. Lady was diagnosed 5 days ago with CVD. I know that this disorder does take a while to improve. I am just worried because she has been laying out flat with occasionally sitting up on her right side today. We have tried the whole towel sling thing but she keeps putting her legs in "superman" (front & back legs straight out in front) position when we pick her up. When I do have someone to help me hold her up I keep trying to place her legs where they need to be but she wont bear any weight. Therefore we are unable to go outside and go potty because she would just lay out flat on the ground. I feel horrible because I don't want to draw this out if she is never going to be able to walk again. This is THE hardest thing I have had to do with my pet. I even worried as a vet assistant for 4 years and never saw one of these cases come along.  Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! I keep praying and it seems like she takes one step forward and 2 back :(
