COMPLAIN!!! To your vet, but ALSO to the Emergency vet IN WRITING.
In a LOT of cities the e-vet is staffed by the area regular vets and they contribute MONEY to this. The e-vet on THAT night is only as good as that particular vet you see (who is just one of the vets in the area -- whoever happens to be "on call" usually).
No one wants to 'complain' because they all NEED the e-vet so they can refer their patients there.
The effective thing to do takes WORK but it's worth it:
1. Get a list from the e-vet of the vets who work with them and who is on their 'board'. (usually they'll have a brochure -- typically they're 'proud' of this).
2. Write a letter -- keep emotion OUT of it. Keep it to facts, but include exactly what happened, who said what. But be plain about what was done and NOT done and how you were treated.
3. Copy that letter to everyone on that list. Send it certified mail return receipt requested to a) the e-clinic, b) the "board of directors", and c) your state's veterinary board. If you want send a copy to the newspaper. But frankly it's the state vet board that is gonna worry them!! Because the vet board MUST investigate.
Say what they did and say what YOU want them to do about it. But keep those certified receipts, and keep the list of everyone you sent it to. KEEP RECEIPTS -- be able to prove who you sent what to on what day. That's important.
One letter won't cut it. You gotta copy everyone. You GOTTA copy the state.
You'll get response.
