I lost Candy in November of 2003 and it was May of 2004 when I got Daisy (I have a daisy too) . It took my whole family (most of which my dad) to get a new dog. My parents were worried about taking care of it while I went to college, but it worked out perfectly because I take her with me to school.
The first couple of weeks we kept calling her "Candy" instead of her real name. I was very happy that Candy and Daisy looked nothing alike, because I think if they looked too similar, you could overlap the dogs. They also had completely opposite personalities. We were so used to a mellow sleepy, laid back dog who was reclusive and hated the outdoors, and then we got Daisy who liked other dogs perhaps more than she liked people!
You will know in your heart when the time is right, and you will look into the eyes of your perspective pup and you'll just feel a click. I think Daisy was sent to me from above, because I slipped into a depression after Candy passed away, and it really did help me come out of it and get a check on reality.
