no bowel movement after surgery

so sorry to hear about your dad. i lost my mom 5 years ago to cancer. i hate this dang disease. my prayers go out to you your dad and your family. it is all so frustrating. with all of the information out there, it's hard to decifer whats real and whats not. who is trying to make a buck off your misery and who is really telling the truth. i met a wonderful lady on this site when libby was first diagnosed. she helped me through and turned me onto a women that told me what to give my girl. i did it all. poor thing had nothing but herbs and vitamins. everyday was a battle to get her to eat never mind stuffing pills down her throat. she suffered in the end horribly. i begged the vet numerouse times to help her out of this pain but each time the vet said she had a lot of life left in her. i won't do this to zimba. i was positive with her that we would beat this horrible thing growing in her but i was wrong. this is why i want to give him a good no carb diet. i will give him the peroxicam in the beginning and see where that leads. if it tears up his stomach i will stop it. he has always been a big eater. loving food more than anything. if that stops than i will know he is in pain. thank you all for the well wishes and help.

Thank you!  I am sorry about your mom.  I lost my mom 12 years ago to the complications of rheumatoid arthritis - actually to the complications caused by the meds that made her life livable, so I know how hard it is.

I am glad that you have decided to put your foot down and not let the vet intimidate you into something your gut tells you is wrong.  Owners know when it is time to let their sick pets go and vets should not be second guessing them.

I'm so sorry to hear about Zimba.  The only thing I have to add is a shot in the dark.  Recently 2 different people have mentioned something about taking benadryl daily to help with cancer.  I thought it was crazy the first time I heard about it and I haven't done any research, but you may want to google and see what comes up.  Benadryl has so few side effects, it might be worth a shot.  Good luck

It depends on the type of cancer and what chemicals it is producing.  Some cancers produce histamines, some produce estrogen, some produce an anti-diuretic, etc.

It's fairly specific for the type of tumor.  For example squamous cell carcinomas like to produce PTH, small cell lung cancer likes to produce ADH, ACTH, adrenal medullary tumors make epinepherine or norepinepherine, mast cell tumors make histamine, etc..... The official term is paraneoplastic syndromes when the cancer cell makes something it shouldn't or it could just make more of something it normally makes like an adrenal medullary tumor or mast cell tumor.

One that is specific for canines is a type of cancer that can strike an undescended testicle.  I don't remember the name of the tumor, but it can produce enough estrogen to destroy the dog's bone marrow.
 
That happened to one of my sister's shelties.  The rescue group where she got the dog told her the dog was neutered.  Unfortunately, he wasn't - someone just jumped to conclusions.  An exploratory surgery turned up the testicles to the absolute shock of the vet.  The dog couldn't heal from the surgery and was in a lot of pain, so he was PTS.
