Should I be Worming on a Schedule?

    Hi!

I recently switched to raw and I'm not sure if I should be worming my boys on a regular basis or not.  They are on Sentinel from May-November but they don't get anything the rest of the year.

Should I plan on treating them or should I not worry about it?

    Thanks so much!

Usually the yearly vet visit will include a fecal (well, not include as in free but they typicaly do one then). If you time that so that you are doing the fecal towards the end of the untreated period, you can see whether your current program is effective.

Worming, whether you do it with a seperate med or whether you do it with your HW meds, kills what is there, rather than being a preventative. So unless your dog is immune suppressed, young, very old, or has a chronic illness, it won't harm your dog to wait and see.

Oh, I just noticed you were sort of asking about the raw. Dogs don't get any of the gi worms from raw meat - that is, nothing that can be treated with regular worming meds. You can get flukes from sheep liver, I THINK, but that's really rare and I'm fairly sure Interceptor (Sentinel) treats them. I know Ivomec (Hartguard) does.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the parasites from the raw foods too much. The only time I recommend deworming a dog year-round is when there are small children in the house.
