Need help with diagnosed fungus infection on Snout of Husky

My dog has a fungus infection on the left side of his snout. It is pink colored and about the size of a quarter. We'd had him to a vet and after three to four weeks no change.

He is on lotrimin cream topically, and 50 MG ketoconanizole a day . No effect . He is a two year old AKA Siberian Husky. This appeared one week after boarding.

I've had huskies for 15 years and have never heard of this before. The vet states it"s common??

Is there a more effective treatment? Any info is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks...Frank

Did the vet do a skin scraping to determine it was a fungus?

Is it ringworm?  Ringworm is a fungus, but I'd have thought the vet would've actually told you it was ringworm.  From what I've heard, it can be difficult and take some time to clear it up.  There have been some other posts regarding it, so you might want to do a search on "ringworm" on this site and see what you find.

Yes the vet did do a skin scraping and cultured it. He just stated it was a fungus and not a bacterial infection

    Thanks,

The vet did not say it was ringworm...just a fungus. He cultured it via a skin scraping.

The fungus not having cleared up even though meds were prescribed warranted a return visit to the vet. At this time I asked if this fungus is RINGWORM.

I was informed yes in fact it is RINGWORM. It seems my husky scraped his nose and rolled it in a pile of grass clippings that was infested with mold.

We have him on Ketoconazole 200mg a day. We also administer lotrimin cream which he licks off almost immediately. Any ideas???

    Thanks,
    Frank

You need to keep him from licking off that lotrimin -- are you using cream or liquid?  Are you bathing him?  Ringworm will spread and it IS contagious to you.  I'm a bit surprised the vet didn't give you something like Malaseb to bathe the dog in -- you have to leave it on for 10-15 minutes (and yeah, you might actually have to put a gauze muzzle on him to keep him from licking).

I would likely be using a back up of either lavender or tea tree oils - both are decent anti-fungals.  Just the tiniest bit massaged in will help back this up.

My guess is that the oral drug is far less effective (and it is INCREDIBLY hard on the liver - please please please give this dog milk thistle at least twice daily -- the adult human dose - just to help support and detox the body).  And the dog is licking off the topical.

So honestly ... altho this is difficult, even if you have to sit with this dog and hold the muzzle shut with your hand to give the medicine time to penetrate and do some good, you need to go the extra mile here to make it be effective.  It's important if for no other reason than it is contagious to you as well.

That all sounds like great advice. I will try the muzzle and herbal tetox. I am using the cream presently. I do have tea tree oil.

We do wash our hans when touching him due to his contagious condition.

    Thanks for the great advice!
