Kaiser is tearing his skin up from itching so bad! He's got a lot of dandruff right now. I bought some itch stop spray, it doesn't seem to be doing much. Is there anything else i can do to relieve him? i think the dry skin is from being inside all the time... • cakana Posted : 12/11/2006 4:17:50 PM I sound like a broken record sometimes, but honestly, the Nu Sal T shampoo worked better than anything else I've tried for the itchiness and dandruff.  The other thing I'd suggest is using benadryl for awhile to get the itch/scratch cycle to calm down.  I think once they get going and irritate the skin, they really need something to stop the whole cycle.  You're probably already using fish oil supplements, but if not, definitely start with those too. 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. There's probably not much the vet could do     thanks, i'll look up that shampoo. He usually takes fish oil but his eyes were a little runny and i thought it might be the fish oil. I don't think it's allergies this time because he;s not red or anything, just really dry and flaky. I'm the one that recommended Virbac spray for dandruff; I use it on Jessie in the winter when she gets dandruff from the low humidity. For itching I agree with Cathy about the shampoo she recommends. Fish oil doesn't keep Jessie from having dry skin but dogs with allergies lose more moisture through their skin; it should help your dog. Kaiser may have pollen allergies; Jessie's eyes used to swell in the spring and summer before she started immunotherapy; was he eating the Purina One at that time of year? • muckypup Posted : 12/11/2006 9:23:56 PM If it is because of the dry time of year you could get a humidifier. I would also use something like Best Shot Ultra Vitalizing Mist. It is a hemectant/leave in condioner. I use it because it replenishes the moisture stipped away from the skin and coat after a bath, it's also an anti-stat and provides UV protection. You don't have to use it after a bath, I use it on brush outs and it helps dry flaky skin/coats. I usually only do a one bag rotation of the EVO, then I go backt o EP Anchovy, Sardine, and Salmon. His itchy/flakey's go away after about a week. • cakana Posted : 12/12/2006 2:15:26 PM I think fish oil supplements are one of the best and safest supplements we can add.  I take them myself.  You can buy them in any vitamin section of the store.  If you use just fish oil caps (they always comes as gel caps), you need to add vit E caps too though (this is necessary for dogs, but not humans).  I prefer to use something like Derm Caps or 3V caps, or something like that, which has both the vit E and omega 3s.  You can order them from any of the pet supply places online or maybe find them at a local petstore.  My dogs will eat them right out of my hand, so I just put them in with their food each morning.  0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available.
