Preparing for the worse

    Preparing for the worse

Laddie had a Cat Scan and it wasn't good news. The tumor is huge and growing across 7 ribs and pushing on the right and growing into the left lung and causing damage to the trach. If we opted for surgery it would mean amputating his right leg and removing 7 ribs, and the doctor said most likely they'd find it to be so bad that they'd have to euthanasia during  surgery. The doctor is given him 2 weeks to a month left to live.  Basically my husband and I are just going to make Laddie as comfortable as possible.

Last Thursday evening Laddie started coughing. Apparently it is caused from fluid in the chest cavity. We had reserved a seaside cottage for the weekend so he got to walk on the beach and we went for a very short nature hike and he loved it. These are the things he enjoyed doing the most and I'm so glad we decided to do it last weekend as it will most certainly be his last [:(]

I read about a sedation pill that can be given prior to euthanization and my vet said that she would prescribe it to us to give to Laddie when its time as we are planning on having him euthanized here at home.

Has anyone ever given their pet a sedation pill prior to being euthanized, and if so would you recommend it? I'm not even sure if at that stage he will be able to down a pill. I mean I've always giving pills wrapped in peanut butter or food. How would I give him a pill if he is coughing up blood, or can't breathe and has zero desire for food?

This is awful to think about, but I have to be prepared.

I just wanted to say how sorry i am for your bad news.  Just spoil Laddie as much as you can, and tell him how much you love him.  This is never an easy decision to have to go through..

Sorry for you and your dog.  I would give the vet a call about the concern of giving the pill.  I would imagine the vet may give a shot of valium or something to sedate him first.  I think it is nice that you are having it done at home.  Dear little dogs.  We love them too much.  But too much is just right.

I'm really sorry to hear about what you're facing with Laddie.  We had to help our lab, Jake, to the bridge a few years ago but I didn't even know or think about pre-sedating him.  I know that others have had the vet give an injection first just to relax the dog, so perhaps you could go that route.  Some folks have mentioned using something like Rescue Remedy, which wouldn't require swallowing a pill.  Again, I'm really sorry that you're having to go thru this.

I'm so sorry.  The vet came to the house in Jan and gave my cat a tranquilizer shot first.  Then I got to say my goodbyes for a while , then he gave the final shot.
It was very peaceful, my cat didn't even move and remained warm and snuggly under his blanket.  I did give him some BACH - Walnut flower essence to help him transition a hour before the vet came.  I played music and candles.  I had asked my deceased cats to come and get their brother a few nites before and up til he passed.  I truely believe his sister came and got him.

You yourself should take some Rescue Remedy or the Walnut.  Try to be brave and put on a smile for your baby.  Crying will upset him,,,(I did cry tho).

    Take care  and HUGS

I sit with tears.  A little over 9 years ago my 12 1/2 yar old Irish Setter was diagnosed with bone cancer.  We gave him the 10 best weeks of his life before letting him go.  It is so hard to do.  I am sending all my good thoughts to you.
