Grooming a Lab

i've worked with show-dog groomers and personal business groomers with 30+ years experience a piece. Honestly, do you think that making hair SHORTER will make it NOT fall out?

No, it doesn't. It makes it easier to groom out. Dense coat is hard to brush all of the undercoat out of, especially if you're only brushing one dog (brushing dogs all day tends to make you quicker, and more efficient). Short coat is easy to brush out.

And anything shaved with a #10 in reverse isn't going to shed much[:D]

We have customer's who just love the after life of their shaved Lab.  They continue to get it shaved every year.

Many years ago when my Sister first started grooming shaving down a lab would have been taboo and no one did it.  Now a days people are looking for dogs that are more part of a home life and are looking for ways to make them more a family member...years ago when my Sister first started grooming there were more outdoor dogs than house dogs.

Just to add, working at a boarding kennel myself the worst shedders I have come in are Huskies, Lab's and Shepherds to name a few....of cours a lot has to do with diet...but, my goodness I have one Lab a retired Champion that just sheds like crazy at the kennel...I feel as though I am constantly vacuuming.

I would like to see what a lab looks like when they are shaved down. Does anyone have a pic?

On a cattle dog discussion list I belong to, a bunch of people were saying that their dogs *like* to be vacuumed. Heh, heh! I don't know if it's specific to cattle dogs ... I haven't tried it with mine yet, she's afraid of the vacuum.

My Jake , a yellow lab, LOVES to be vaccumned.  He literally follows me around when I turn it on until I stop and vaccumn HIM. LOL   If  I tell him"wait a minute Jake"he gives me that pitiful lab look and I just have to stop and get him done.
