Reverse Sneezing Caused by Nose Mites!

For YEARS I have wanted to stop my dogs from reverse sneezing. It doesn't look right, sound right, feel right in ANY way. Yet all the vets I asked said, "Oh, that's normal."

WRONG! Apparently it's caused by nose mites. (Take time to shudder now.) One of my students told me about her dog being diagnosed with it and I was amazed. If you google it you can get lots of info.

The treatment is ivermectin. I really, really want to divest my dogs of these mites, but before I do I'm going to have to get them tested for the MDR1 gene, the one that make sighthounds and collies and shelties very sensitive to ivermectin.

Anyone else ever treat their dogs for nose mites?

That's interesting, Jean.  Thanks for posting.  None of my dogs has ever reverse sneezed on a regular basis.  Twister did have a severe bout of it a few years ago but it went away after an hour or so and several hundred dollars spent at the E vet. :(

I've been researching this for a few days. Apparently it is rarely diagnosed. Most vets just say, "Oh, all dogs do that." Hmm

I googled it after reading your post and it seems to be one possible reason for reverse sneezing but if I had a dog that did it on a regular basis, I'd sure see about treating it with the ivermectin to see if it clears up.

I have a 6 year old Shih Tzu/ Japanese Shin mix. He was suffering from reverse sneezing for months. The vet said it was allergies and said to give him Benedryl. Even after allergy season, he continued. I finally took him to a specialist and the first thing she said was he probably has nose mites. She started him on the ivermectin and boom - no more reverse sneezing. he has been clear for weeks. My specialist vet said they hide in the soil and small dogs are more susceptible because of the proximity of their nose to the ground. But I am so glad I took him to the specialist. He is doing so much better now!!!

Bichons do reverse sneeze now and again, mine have each done it probably 2 or 3 times a year.  Just 2 or 3 and then done.  We stop it by pinching the nose.

For prolonged bouts, I'd be running to the vet too.  This is very interesting info, thanks!
