PNW Folks - Heartworm and Flea treatments

For those of you living in the PNW and/or Salem, OR area, what is your experience with fleas, ticks and heartworms out here? The vet we selected doesn't carry Interceptor in their office, only Iverhart, which I won't use.  I am having a devil of a time getting them to verify my purchase through 1800PetMeds to buy Interceptor.  I've been told by vets and a friend out here, that fleas, ticks and heartworm are not big issues out here. One other vet office I called also did not carry Interceptor and said that they used Revolution for fleas and heartworm because they rarely see heartworm out here.

Can anyone else give me some advice and/or thoughts on this? My dogs have been on Interceptor and Frontline for years and have never had issues.  Since I know it works, I'd kinda like to keep doing the same old, same old, ya know? The dogs are known to eat bunny poop and deer poop on hikes, though this is less likely these days as they are on leash a lot more.

You're wise -- Dog.com has a new pharmacy too apparently and I don't know what they require as far as prescription goes.

Interceptor does MUCH more than heartworm -- and I only do it every 45 days.  Heartworm is in all 50 states now (including Alaska) because honestly you can see mosquitos hitching a ride on fruit in refrigerated trucks, etc.

Revolution is nasty stuff in my book -- and if you have ever had a flea allergic dog you don't want the first bite to happen (and Revolution stays in the blood -the parasite has to bite the dog TO die).  Frontline you can get online pretty easily.

Offer the vet that either they can write you a prescription so you CAN buy it or they can order it themselves, but that's the product YOU want.  You're the consumer and you've got a good idea of what YOU want.  (in my opinion, there's nothing like sticking to your guns sometimes)

I'm not in the PNW ... but often it's the office staff that can't work their brains around "how to do" something.  You might have to print off the form from PetMeds and physically take it in and have the vet sign it and fax it yourself.  Or call PetMeds and find out how to make a work around -- yours can't be the only vet to be problematic.  I hope that helped.

Callie, my vet has told me they will not authorize prescriptions over the phone. So they faxed me a copy of the script, which I sent to PetMeds, but they need vet authorization, not just an email pdf from some yahoo.  So because my vet is a I apparently can not buy it online. I can however log into their portal and buy it from them that way.  Just pisses me off the way they are being about the whole thing. They asked me why I don't use their portal and it was because it took 4 days for them to authorize me and get it worked out, meanwhile PetMeds was done and submitted in 20 minutes.  When then asked why I don't want to try Iverhart, I told them because that drug has killed dogs and since my dogs are mutts I have no idea if they have the gene that could react to the ivermectin and I wasn't going to risk it.  The tone on the phone during this led me to believe they are not going to be good about this.

I swear I'm switching vets. Any vet that is *this* obnoxious about stuff is no vet indeed.

Having lived in WA state for years I can tell you the crap you'll get about it not being important to HW prevent your dogs is just that - crap. You go to the shelters there and they too have HW+ puppers who need help and a friend's dog contracted HW. Granted she probably did on a trip to Texas, but it's definitely out there. Are the chances as high as high as in a southern state? No of course not, but why take any chance. Your vet sounds realy horrid. My vets ALL recommended and carried Interceptor no matter what part of the state I was residing in or visiting long term. Seems a lot of PNW folks like keeping their heads in the sand about HW, but that's everywhere it seems. I would be changing vets.
