] Oh I know - there is a big sign at our vet showing that a 90+lb dog at 6 is in their upper 50's if I recall correctly.  Its just that his behavior and conditioning are those of a younger dog but the knees are his weakness.  I do not want to even think about our future as he will surely have some significant knee issues but I can't see him ever losing desire to be very active.  Makes me sad but hopefully I can find out what is happening, fix it and move on

((( Karen))) The chart at my vet says that Jessie is about 80, but she still needs to burn off energy. We walk her an hour or more daily. A few weeks ago she wasn't walked for 2 days; on Friday it rained the whole day, and we were gone for 15 hours on Saturday.  When we got home, she insisted on playing .We very tired and tried to ignore her but she wouldn't take no for an answer. She was satisfied after chasing her frisbee and playing tug of war for about half an hour. I wish the problem with Bugsy's knees could be solved as easily as we solved Jessie's problem, but I believe you will find out what's going on because you care so much.

I wonder if raising the bowl isn't a just a generally good idea? Is there any reason not to?

It used to be thought that raising the food dish prevented bloat in large, deep chested dogs, until Purdue did a study that showed the opposite. I feel it's worth the risk for Jessie because it seems to have relieved the stress on her knees. Also, she gets fed four small meals a day because she has chronic pancreatitis, so that should reduce any risk of bloat.

Thanks Janice. That's good to know and for now, I'll leave the bowl where it is. :)

Karen, I just wanted to say hope that you can get Bugsy fixed up.  I'm sure that when hes not his crazy, active self you really worry and miss that.

Thanks Lori - of course he's not limped or shown issues since I booked the appointment
