Lucky Wobbling (Just took a tick off her think its a lone star Pictures Included) Help....

I couldn't sleep and I was just heading to bed and of course when I move so does Lucky, well when she got up to walk she was wobbling as if she was about to fall down because her legs wanted to give out, back legs more then the front well I start to ball and petting her and telling her don't do this to me. Well then I go to take her outside I thought maybe she was stiff because she had been sleeping but I looked her over and seen this tick which I didn't see yesterday morning when i brushed her. Here are the picture's I think its a lone star tick, what should I do??? I'm ready to take her to the vets which they are closed called the emergency number so far no one called me back.

Could this tick be making her wobbly? Sorry camera wasn't working right. I'm a nervous wreck right now I have the tick in a baggie

If you are seeing an engorged tick, probably the symptoms don't come from the tick you found, but obviously you are in a tick-infested area and your dog was probably exposed before this, so, yes, it's possible she has a tick-borne illness.  Trip to the vet for sure.  Hope that's all it is and that you can get her up to snuff really soon.  Tick species is not so important as it used to be for some diseases, like Lyme, as we are finding that the deer tick, the dog tick, and the Lone Star tick can all carry it.  Lone Stars carry other diseases, too, though, as you know.

I'm wondering how long it was on her I brushed her yesterday and I didn't see anything I pet her all the time never felt anything I always feel for ticks when I took her outside I petting her and thats when I felt it. Angry with myself right now for not finding it sooner I looked her over now I don't see anything.

Vets open at 8 so I'm just gonna head over there now. Wish us luck Sad

Fingers and paws are crossed.  How's she doing thismorning?  Did you keep the tick to take with you?

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes I kept the tick it was just a regular tick, I really couldn't tell you what the vet said but he said Lucky should be fine, her wobbly back legs are stronger now, I do recall him saying that usually within 12 hours of taking the tick off her she should be back to normal. Blood work was fine but he said he could of ran blood work to see if the tick gave her some kind of disease but said if it did it wouldn't show anything right now anyway.

Lucky is doing much better but I wish she wouldn't get up every single time I move wish she would relax she's my shadow and if I get up to walk anywhere she's right behind me. Wish my brain was working clearly but I was so worried that whatever else was said went in one ear and came out the other.

If she starts acting like that again take her for a Lyme test.  And, it takes a tick with the disease to be attached for so many hours (I think it's 48 hrs or 72) before the disease would be transmitted.  So, it's possible since you didn't see it the day before that it didn't cause anything.

BUT, the symptoms could be from another tick.  It can sometimes take months for any symptoms to show after they are exposed.   But, sudden onset of limping is definately the major symptom.  Willow was having trouble laying down too.  Also, panting, not eating, stumbling are some others.

Are they on Frontline or anything?

    • Gold Top Dog

Yea I'm gonna go back next month to have the disease test from the ticks done on her he said it was $50 and he did say it wouldn't show up right now so he didn't want me to waste my money on the test, which was nice of him not to try to get more money out of me.

I had them on advantage since I was using Frontline for awhile it didn't seem to work anymore so I switched to advantage.  Vet did recommended some kind of tick collar guess its like a flea collar said no complaints yet from it and it last 3 months it's only for ticks so I would have to get a flea product as well but he did say with Lucky I would have to shave her around her neck since the collar gotta be near the skin.

So I just got Frontline again I'll see if that works, if not maybe I'll switch to the K-9 one.  I was very scared my fault for not catching it sooner I guess I'm gonna have to shave Lucky anyway with all that hair its hard to see anything on her.

Today she's back to normal but as I said I'm taking her back for the Lyme disease test and the other things he had said. I will be keeping an eye out for it again. She was fine until 6am yesterday when I got out of the chair she woke up and followed me and thats when it started.

    Thanks again Smile

Yeah, if it is Lyme disease or something like that the symptoms are very very subtle until they get bad and then it seems like all of a sudden they are sick.  Willow was "fine" around 10pm and by 1am unable to lay down when she had it in May.

The collar he mentioned to you is called Preventic collar.

Be very careful if you decide to use this collar!!  The primary ingredient is Amitraz.

    Amitraz Dip (Mitaban)

"Wear eye protection when using amitraz and protect exposed skin with rubber gloves. Wash hands and arms with soap and water after treating pets. Use in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhalation of vapors."

Ingestion can be fatal to pets (people?).  Do not use these collars on cats.  If another dog may chew on the collar or if a cat may lick the collar (or the dog), do not use this tick collar.  Do not use on Basenjis since they clean themselves like cats and will ingest the Amitraz.

Frankly, if people need to use rubber gloves to avoid contact with a Amitraz dip, I would think twice about putting the stuff on a dog.
