broken tail?

    broken tail?

We took Misty to stay at a lady's house instead of to the kennel since she is so nervous (this did not work out well at all, she was still a nervous wreck) and last night after we got her home, I noticed that her tail looked strange. I actually noticed it when I went to get her, but I thought she was just holding her tail down because she was scared/upset.  She usually holds her tail up when she's excited or playful, now it droops downward. She can hold it up, but doesn't hold it that way for long. She is wagging it fine, and doesn't seem particularly bothered if we touch it, but even when she is resting, it's sort of curled inward, which is not her typical position.

***edited to add*** could having a seizure have caused something neurologic to occur, thus the odd positioning of the tail? She had one seizure before, and the lady said that she peed in her house, and it makes me wonder if she had one there because Misty is a dog who never, EVER soils indoors.

    Here's her usual "stance"

     Here's what it's like now

When I run my fingers along the tail itself, I don't feel anything that feels broken or out of the norm, but she is just holding it oddly. The day before we took her to be boarded, I got her groomed, and her tail was really matted...maybe it's sore from being dematted and trimmed? I just don't know what to think. My husband of course, thinks her tail got shut in the door or something.

She can hold her tail up to go potty, but it seems like it's hard for her to do and then she just releases her hold on it. I guess a trip to the vet is in order on Monday.

Aw, poor sweetie. I hope she's ok. Next time, just drop her off at my house. Smile

     Poor Misty!

I would have her checked for a UTI.  How long since you had her anal glands checked?

Hounds are prone to something called "dead tail" or "cold tail" - mine has had it once since I've owned him, and he recovered by himself.

Cold Tail was the first thing I thought of, too (and that link. LOL).

The tail problem resolved in a few days, and tonight it seems to have happened again. I know she ran really hard yesterday...but even this morning she was wagging her tail just fine and then tonight she was acting strangely and kept looking back at her tail....that's when I noticed that it was hanging limp. I don't know if something happened while I was gone tonight or if she rolled on it strangely or what...I know she did crawl under the coffee table at one point, so maybe she hurt herself then. I don't think it's broken, because she isn't crying and does allow me to touch her, but she clearly is feeling something back there. I guess I'll call the vet tomorrow. Makes me wonder what she's got in her heritage, since only certain breeds are prone to this happening.

I'm going to hope it's just another episode of dead tail, but best to check it out.  You mentioned that she had recently been groomed the first time it happened - I've heard of dogs getting a chill and having dead tail occur.  This time, was she in the cold, or in water?  (Dock diving dogs get this a lot.) Heavy exercise in a less than fit dog can also cause it, and any large dog can be susceptible, although it occurs more frequently in some breeds.  There are some other causes for limp tails, and some are more serious, so a visit to the vet is a good idea.

Bugsy has had it happen twice - once after a swim - even though the water wasn't cold (he's swam in that lake countless times so no clue why it happened) and another time he was out for a few minutes and came in and his tail was limp.

The second time we took him to the vet because I didn't see much info on getting 'cold tail' without swimming.  We had x-rays and they 'thought' they saw a chip of bone off a tail vertebrae but honestly it was hard to see.  Once again it passed in a few days.  That was several years ago and its never happened again. So who knows.

It is feasible that Bugsy could chip a bone in his tail -honestly its hard to imagine he hasn't at this point! I am more likely to think it is a version of 'cold tail'.  My understanding is that the important thing is that they still poop and pee, some dogs won't if there is a tail issue - Bugsy didn't care and went about his business as normal

Hopefully it passes quickly and is nothing more than cold tail
