Can you ask your vet why he or she prescribes antibiotics for a viral kennel cough.
Most of the time they give antibiotics because people want them -- and "expect" the vet to give them something. In the case of viral vs. bacterial? There's no way of knowing which ... and often they give antibiotics in case a bacterial infection ALSO comes along.
Your statement that antibiotics are over-used is absolutely correct -- but that's a *typical* vet protocol. That's where owners need to step up and say "Hmmmm, do we NEED to give TWO antibiotics?? Is it really going to be effective" But unfortunately most people expect and *want* antibiotics despite the fact that they probably aren't going to help a virus.

I was under the impression the shot controlled the infectious kind.
Nope -- not the case at all. The shot ONLY helps provide immunity to THAT strain it was vax'd for. That's a little like assigning Crayola Crayon colors to all the different bugs .. and understanding that the vaccine ONLY helps develop immunity for ... let's say "burnt sienna" and maybe "sky blue". ALL THE REST of the "colors" (i.e., bugs) really have no help. There is some hope that "similar" strains may be protected by similar antibodies -- but nothing is at all certain ... just hopeful.
A shot "controlls" nothing. It is simply a bit of a strain of the disease -- then the body is exposed to that strain ... and hopefully that will result in antibodies being formed. But whether it's a human flu shot or bordatella (kennel cough) -- the vax ONLY helps the body with whatever strains went into making the vaccine.
For example - the parainfluenza part of the "combo" shot -- the strains that covers really haven't even been SEEN in over 20 years.
Unfortunately insurance companies that insure kennels use bordatella as a "catch all" -- thinking if the dog has had the vax then it's "not their fault" if the dog got sick. So because their insurer requires it the kennels do -- and it's simply something that looks good on paper because no one can buck the insurance companies. But the shot really doesn't help much of anything.
