How does your dog act around cats?

We just had the opportunity to find this out.  Our upstairs neighbours (good friends of ours) just adopted a kitty and this past weekend we decided to introduce or dog to him.  She's 2-3 years old, no clue if she was ever around cats much before we we've only had her since May and her past history is unknown.  She was absolutely wonderful with him.  Laid down, watched him, went over to touch noses.  Orion (the cat) seems to really like Dahlia as well.  The two of them frequently touch noses and follow each other around.  Here's the two of them hanging out in the kitchen while we made dinner.

If it is a dog-friendly kitty my cairn sniffs briefly and then ignores it.  However, a kitty that acts afraid, hisses, growls, or runs ignites the prey drive in my cairn.

    does this answer your question?

they love eachother. Although.... I would say Carleigh is much more attached to the dog than he is her..... haha

Cats naturally run from dogs, Ari naturally wants to play chase :)  That said - Ari was brought up in the breeder's house who had a cat who LOOOOVED puppies - so for Ari she is actually good with cats, but does try to play with them like they are dogs.

Buddy has no issues with the three family cats.  He leaves them alone with the exception of wanting to go up to them and sniff.  Stray cats that wander in the yard or cats we see on walks are a different story...he will go after them.  If we see them on walks, I can catch him before he gets to riled up and can keep him in check.  He whines about it...but he stays by my side and we walk on by.

Heidi has such a high prey drive, I have to keep her separated from the family cats.  She will do ok as one approaches her while behind the gate, but only if I'm there to keep her in check.  If I'm not there and one approaches, she gets snarky.  Its an issue.  If the dogs are free in the house, I have to lock up the cats in a safe room.

I am completely and utterly envious of those of you whose dogs and cats live in harmony.  Stick out tongue

Maska - not your typical hound.  He really likes cats and wants to wander up and greet them all.

Fergie - pays them no mind.  She was raised with cats and other dogs and is 6 pounds of "no fear".

Sioux - raised with barn cats.  Will chase a strange cat, but is easily called off.

Sequoyah - if it moves, it's lunch

LT: Ignores them mostly. Sometimes she will kind of play with the foster kittens. She mostly just likest to steal their food but has moments of geniune affection for them.

Soda: Obnoxious. If they meow or if I say "kitty kitty kitty" (ie: if I'm calling the cat) she runs over and stares all border-collie like at the poor cat. She gets in trouble with that. With the foster kittens she likes to lick their butts but if they walk towards her she growls and runs off. It's funny.

Cash: He's my baby raiser. I fully expected him to want to eat them (being a malamute and all) but he has, what I would consider a geniune and deep affection for them. He seems to care for each and every one. Last night he was laying outside their cage letting one play with his ear. He plays very gently with them and he lets them sleep on him. He's a good dog. He's scared of my big cat, lol. He tried to clean her butt and she turned around and WALLOPED him and his feeling were so hurt! He ran and jumped in my lap and cried and cried because the big ol' kitty was mean to him. Now he won't even walk past her.

Pretty much like the pic in my sig. Once in a while, Shadow will go after her and to be fair, she instigates a lot of stuff, taking swipes at him as he goes by. But he will break it off on command. Otherwise, they coexist. A funny thing that Jade (the cat) does is that she will try to bite you. Even during affection. I have a feeling that this is because she didn't learn everything about being a cat, being alone on the streets at about 4.5 weeks, when we found her.

The above pic is not long after they first met. She was hanging around a friend's house. I walked Shadow over there and he gave play signals, though she didn't know what to make of it. So, I walked him back home and got the truck and brought her home. This pic is in our backyard and shows how accepting he was of her in his domain.

Thor came after the cats, he is the "little" brother... And he loves them!! He will cuddle, kiss, clean butts and even break fights between the two cats. That only one time Thor was home alone, no humans, no cats, he went nuts: He ripped the telephone pad! Go figure what he thought when he did that (maybe he wanted to call the neighbour cat to come over and give him company ~lol~

They all have this cute reunions:

Luke is not very amused about Thor, but once in a while they have their moments:

Zarina interacts with Thor a lot and they not only look alike, but they love eachother!

After this, you would understand: Thor loves every cat he sees!

Neither does well around cats as they have never been raised/socialized around them.  If they see one out on a walk, my oldest rattie gets excited to play with it and the rescued stray I adopted just growls and isn't friendly toward them at all.  Probably had to fight a ffew stray cats in her street days.

Our cat, Neemo (manx), is a really funny cat. He acts like a dog!! He loves to play with Apollo...he also "sneak attacks", as you can see, popping out of nowhere to surprise Apollo right when Apollo was going to nap...

We don't have a cat so not sure how B would do with a cat in the house or that didn't run away but he would like to eat outside cats.  hates them more than anything else I've seen

It's bad with cats, been 18 months of a twice-daily battle of "Leave it".  "Sit".  "Look at me".  "LEAVE IT".   The dog is obsessed.   We have progressed beyond him lunging like a maniac, but he lives for the daily walks past houses where cats live.   He locks on and freezes -  and I give him 10 seconds to get over it.  If he can't, I have to physically remove him.  It wouldn't be pretty if he ever got nose to nose.  But his brain is so focused that he locks in on PICTURES of cats.  This was one of our vet visits, see the diagram on the wall.  He didn't move from this position for over 10 minutes.  Everybody at the vet office had to come in a see, it was so wierd.  They carried him out, but he never moved a muscle and his eyes never left that picture.  He has actually stopped and locked onto brochures that have cat pictures.

OMG that is funny!  B has discovered that cats like to hide in the culverts so we can't walk too close to them or it is bedlum

He loves to chase them and snuggle with them.  He really dosen't dislike them.
