How does your dog act around cats?

We don't have any indoor cats but we do have a few 'barn kitties'.  All of the dogs are used to the cats and are really very good with them.  Keisha does enjoy the occasional game of 'pounce on the kitty' but she isn't very rough and the cat actually just sits there.  Zoe likes to play and get a little rough sometimes but she respects that 'mad kitty sound' and backs off quickly. Lacie lays down and the cats just come and lay right down with her.  Rex either ignores them or smells them and just walks away.  Jazzy smell them and is pretty unconcerned about them.

Cheyanne has been around cats since she came to live with me as a puppy. So she doesnt pay any attention to them. BUT she will chase off any cats that wander into the yard that isnt mine. She seems to know when I bring one in though and will leave it alone.

Lillie loves kittens. They are fun to clean and play with. But unfortunately she isnt allowed to play with them as much as she would like. She doesnt respect that "mad" kitty sound like your Zoe does. She doesnt pay attention to the cats.

Kujo loves the kittens also. They are the perfect size to play with for a little while. She likes cats if they will play with her. Unfortunately the cats/kittens are the only animals she can play with around her as all the dogs are too big.

He stops and stares, tugs at the leash a bit.  I'm sure if I dropped it he'd be after the cat in a heartbeat but he doesn't leap or lunge at them.  They don't drive him as batty as the squirrels do.

Monroe was raised with three cats and when Morrison came along there was just one left.  While Monroe pretty much ignores the cat but occasionally he does give chase, he has learned to give up before catching him though (all nails intact).

Morrison, on the other hand, firmly believes that the cat exists to cuddle with.  A picture is worth a thousand words, even if it is a bad one.  Morrison was only a few months old and the cat is very large - I know.

That is a BIG cat!! I dont know what my dogs would do if they saw one that size.

And I thought my cat was big! You win lol

anyway - to the original question:

Dakota - would like to eat the cat. She's the reason the cat has its own room to escape to.

Neiko loves the cat and licks the cats butt clean whenever he gets the chance. He doesn't chase it or anything.

Lily gets jealous of the cat when it snuggles with me but she also licks the cats butt clean whenever she can.

Abbie chases the cat and tries to get it to play by enclosing her mouth around the cats head or pawing at it. The cat just stands there and ignores Abbies play attempts. He doesn't even hiss or swat at her.

Amelia absolutely loves cats.  In the last few months I have bottle fed 8 kittens ranging in age from 2 weeks old to 3 1/2 weeks old (rescued and abandoned).  The first 3 I had for about a week, the latter I only had 3 days. **I found good homes for all but one*** With each litter Amelia kept them clean and safe.  She would not leave them, and if they cried she made sure I was there for them.  I kept one from the first litter (Cari) and her and Amelia sleep together and play together.  They are ALWAYS together.  Amelia still keeps her clean.  And when they sleep whatever position Amelia is in Cari is too.  This weekend I adopted (from a cat rescue) a kitten as a playmate for Cari.  Mackenzie had never been around dogs and I was slightly concerned, but knew Amelia is so good with cats.  As soon as Mackenzie got home Amelia wanted to lick her all over, but Mackenzie wasn't having it.  She hid for a night.  now they are best buds and play together.  they aren't sleeping together but Mackenzie just hasn't figured out to come into the bedroom at bedtime.  I think she will by this weekend though.  Amelia still cleans them both whenever she gets a chance.  And Amelia will keep them in line if she thinks they are getting into trouble.  She goes and steps in.  She is such a good mommy.  Having said all that, I have a number of feral cats.  I live in the boonies.  Amelia chases everyone of those cats.  You can tell just to see one of their shadows gets her heart to race.  She gets all excited.  She is always on a leash outside so she will never catch one.  not sure what she would do if she did catch one.

KC loves our cat, but let another one wander into his yard and they are toast; him and Spookey are so funny together. We love watching them "play" together.

THAT IS A CAT!!!!!!  WOW!!!!!!! I almost thought it was two dogs:) LOL!

LOL - I have fun by telling people that he is a HS cat from Winnipeg, where they have to be big and tough to survive. Wink  He does say "Meow, eh?"

Last night the cat and Morrison were grooming each other!  Pretty good for a high prey drive dog, I think.

Wow, that is a BIG cat!  I thought my mom's cat Pia was big.

Honor thinks cats are her playmates, but they want nothing to do with her.  Especially my mom's cats, which is sometimes a problem.  My mom's cats absolutely hate dogs, and Chloe will actually turn and chase Honor if Honor won't leave her alone.  I really believe Honor's intentions are just to play, but my mom's cats want nothing of it. Stick out tongue

Nike has so far just stared at my neighbor's cat.  I'm not sure what's going on in his head.

first here's a profile of my kitties

GIR - tolerates the dogs - plays with Bella on a nightly basis, but no one else

little white devil - very timid, tolerates dogs, doesn't play with them

Kit-tay - foster kitty - tolerates the dogs

Kit Kat - does not tolerate the dogs if they get too close - almost all the dogs have learned to leave her be.

    DOGS:

Sheba- doesn't mess with any of the kitties

Akyra - sniffs the kitties thats it

Bella- - LOOOVES playing with GIR. I think she might think that she's a cat, she plays more with GIR than the other dogs.

Amber - tries to chase the kitties constantly - but after a run in with kit kat she'll probably stop

this pic is so cute of GIR & Sheba

Dance is absolutely terrified of cats, Winston couldn't care less about them, and Keira is working on toning down her prey drive towards all small critters (cats included).
    • Gold Top Dog

Well, my Totti has quite a prey drive, he loves chasing them, but if a cat stops he just walks around it and makes some funny beagle noises... But I'm always around, if I were not, I think he would really attack the poor creature.

Hi all. My family's not a big fan of cats and so we haven't had any cats at all. Which means our dogs (Red, Felicity and Magic) are not used of seeing cats around the house. But when some cats from our neighbors barged in our gate, our dogs will go wild and starts to bark at them, as if like they wanted to kill the poor cats. But our dogs haven't harmed any cats so far. Cuz they are all in their cages. Good thing.
