Where did you get your dog?

I received Belle from my daughter for Christmas.  She got her from a family who's dog had puppies.

Gracie--I took when a family no longer wanted her because as a puppy she was just too active and one of their children was afraid of her (although they knew this prior to getting her).

Treasure and Olivia--They came from the same breeder.  When I got them, I was sure she was a reputable breeder, but after learning more, I am not really sure.  She did many of the things that reputable breeders do and I think she has good intentions, but I do wonder if she was a byb.

Katza, my cat, I got from a humane society that sets up in Pet Smart.

    My past dogs:

Missi- I got her from Petland before I knew any better (#3)

Evangeline- I got her from a Rescue (#1)

My Pomeranian puppy Aisha,  that I pick up on the 15th is from a Reputable Breeder (#2)

    Cadie - reputable breeder

    Riley - humane society

And just because I'll do our other dogs (passed on)...

    Canis - pound

    Brenna - reputable breeder

Slick - same breeder as Brenna, they were littermates

Ozzie and Kelsey - two of Brenna's puppies

Bailey (the dog) came from a rescue.

Sophie (the cat) came from a reputable breeder.  She earned her championship title and then was spayed and adopted to us when it was obvious that she didn't like being a mom.

GSD/? (mix) "Nala" came from local Florida Shelter [childhood dog; was put to sleep in 1994]

Sheltie "Meeko" came from the infamous Debby's Pet Land (so who knows where she actually came from) [childhood dog; still alive w/Mom]

Pomeranian "Kayla" came from a litter in Arkansas (BYB) [current dog]

I also rescued "Kody" & "Kricket" (Pomeranians) from the same breeders but rehomed them to wonderful families in NH & MA (we still have puppy playdates hehe)

You live and learn... I now support the fight against BYB/Puppy Mill/Pet Stores. All dogs deserve a home but the sad truth is we need to avoid the "cute puppies in the windows" at the stores & always do our "homework" before every purchase. :o)

My next dog will be from a Reputable Breeder of Poms probably out of the state of Washington.

Emma was born at the local Humane Society. I adopted her when she was 8 weeks old, and brought her home when she was 9 weeks.

My husband's band played at a private party in Vermont five years ago.  The guy who hired them was Willow's first owner.  They were having lots of financial and medical issues and were going to put her down because she was growling at them. They had her outside, but that's another story.

DH really, really liked her and called me.  But, when he told me she was a chow, I said no.  I had heard things, LOL!  Plus, at the time we were renting an apartment.  I didn't want to have to give her up after all that. But, he took her anyway.  And, I'm so, so glad he did.  What I would of missed out on without her would have just been a huge loss.  And, I still thank God that my landlady was a huge dog lover.

Both were from the local animal shelter and both of them were also owner drop offs there.

Trinket - Breeder... unable to breed, breeder was getting rid of. BYB/PM :(   C-section disaster

Winston - Pupppy milll rescue, retired breeder.

Toby - Call from my groomer.   Picked up stray, abandoned... probably due to old age.

Pippin - Free from a co-worker.  Purchased at a pet store, did not work out for family, they gave him to me.

I have worked rescue for over twenty years.  I just couldn't go to a pet store.  Three of my four dogs were adopted as adults.  Nothing but GOOD experience.  Two of them were seniors (Toby and Winston).  I highly recommend it :)

[/quote] True that. I live in NH and as a young kid I would always beg my parents to buy that "cute little puppy" in the window of Debby's Petland but they would never let me. They always had to go to that "perfect" breeder. I never understood why until two close friends bought puppies from there and they turned out to be unhealthy little demons, with wicked separation anxiety.

     Let's see...

Buster came from an Animal Rescue League (found as a stray at 3 months old)

Lady came from Petland (although she was bought by DH's family before I knew them)

Max also came from an Animal Rescue League (found as a stray at about 1 year old)

Benny was given up by his previous owner so I took him in, although I believe she bought him at Petland.

    FREE FROM CRAIGSLIST/FAMILY MEMBER/FRIEND/CO-WORKER

    PET STORE/BYB/PUPPY MILL

All three. Shadow was bought by friends in a pet store who was most likely selling for a byb, since the breeder doesn't show up on any lists. And we got Shadow from a friend, specifically.
