What Kind of Leash do you prefer ?

Out of curiosity , and since I haven't a clue how to create a poll I will just ask the old fashioned way.

What kind of leash or lead do you like best. Legnth and material  ?

My personal favorite is a 6-8 foot  1 to 1 1/2 inch leather lead. Clip connector.  I use flexis but prefer the old fashioned ribbon over the string or cord style.  Ace Hardware also sells a great nylon lead, 6 foot and about 1 inch wide.  I like the colors they offer so when I have a litter of puppies I buy all of them matching collars and leads  Bwana Blue of course ! Cool

Least favorite Chain Leads of any type. Never have liked them .

It depends on the situation, but overall I really prefer lighter leads for long walks.  My favorite right now is actually a horse rein.   I can walk 2 dogs with one lead, easily adjust the length for each dog just by moving my hand up or down the length of it (keeping Woobie close when he won't stop pulling), and I've used it to train them to walk without me touching it.  I let it loop behind my legs and drop it on the ground.  When I need to stop, I can stop walking and it catches me behind my ankles if they don't stop right away and they can't get away.  When we're walking if they start to stray from where they're supposed to be, it's dragging on the ground and I can step on it quickly to issue a quick correction.  It's worked really well for me and I've gotten comments from people passing by that they can't believe what they're seeing.

I also really like the short traffic leads.  They're perfect for keeping them close on our walk from the parking lot to the dog park and they're not getting too far away from me or tangled up when greeting other dogs.  I think it would be good for teaching a heel.

I have a 6 foot leather hunting lead that I love. I have not been able to find another like it. It has snaps on both ends and places along the leash at in three places to hook the snap to.

You can walk one dog hands free with it, you can walk two dogs on it without a coupler or you can walk one dog in the traditional way using it either as a 6 footer with a hand loop or a 3 footer with a hand loop.

I have no idea who makes it and I bought it years and years ago in a sporting store in the hunting dog section.

4 foot, 1/4" leather. 6 feet is too much lead to work with. I do have a 6 foot, 5/8" leather "service dog" lead that I can use to walk both dogs, or to tie one up with. I like that one, pretty well.

for potty trips (i live in an apartment) i have 2 3-4 ft leashes tied together at the ends. it's easier to just have to hold ONE object than 2, when you have to handle doors, keys elevator buttons, etc. i like nylon leashes, just cause they are so pretty. i'm thinking of just making one long leash with a clip on either side myself..

for walks i use the flexi. i walk the 2 dogs seperately, so the flexi is nice, cause it gives me control with traffic etc, but the dog gets some freedom as well, when appropriate. it's a 8 or 10 meter ribbon flexi (in a very cute orange!)

I have a variety of leads hanging at the back door but 99% of the time I use a 26 ft. flexi with a harness. If I am going to an off leash park I always clip on my handle lead. It is a looped leather lead about a foot long. It is great if I have to quickly grab hold of Kobi, yet he can run around without dragging a line.

I also use a harness--I've never liked collars on any dog--and we walk/hike with a flexi leash and I also have a handle attached to her if I need it.  For the vets office and/or groomer we use a 4 ft leather leash with a rolled leather collar.  I stopped using the harness at the vet or groomer because they can't seem to get it off and on her easily enough.

I have a very soft cotton/nylon plaited 6 foot leash that I use for walks on the street, very easy on my hands.  Once we get to a trail I switch to a 30 foot horse longe line made of nylon webbing.  Strong, goes through mud and water, easy to clean, a heavy duty snap -- closest we'll ever come to off-leash.

When we first got Barney my husband went shopping and came home with a chain-leash.  I forbid him to use it and it still has the tags on it.  One mistake of getting caught around a dog leg... very unforgiving.

Kobi had to wear a chain leash for a period of time when he was a puppy. I don't know how many times I put him in the car to go to the park, opened the door, grabbed the leash - no dog attached! He must have chewed through a dozen leashes. LOL!

LOL too!  That's why dh got the chain -- he turned his back on Barney while having a conversation and had 2 half-leashes! (I told him he just couldn't look away anymoreSmile)

He also had a habit of eating his harness right off his back if you didn't take it off immediately.  Lost a couple of those.

This is our every day leash...

Got it from Ashley and Raja on here, in a swap...which is why I have a picture of it. lol

It's 5' and nylon.. I don't know what that kind of snap is called, but it's the only kind I'll use.. I hate having to fight with the leash and the dog to put it on. This kind just slides right on... I really like the 5' length. Long enough that the leash isn't tight when Cherokee's more than like an inch away from me, but short enough that it's manageable.

She had a leather lead a looong time ago (within a few months of getting her, I think), and she was tied to our front porch one day when a squirrel went running by.. Cherokee took off after the squirrel, and the lead snapped clean. Looked like it'd been cut. I've never used a leather leash again.

Well, it's nice to know I'm not alone.  I have a lovely collection of half-leashes thanks to Indie.  Before I started using the portable crates in the car, he chewed Woobie's harness right off him in the time it took to get to the dog park (less than 10 min.).  Luckily, he won't chew his own harness but I can't crate him with his leash or it's toast.  I bought a lovely 50 ft. lead made of parachute cording and it never saw the light of day, he popped the lid on the rubbermaid container where everything is kept and chewed it into at least 20 pieces!  Super Angry

I hate the chain leashes (I have one too) because when you need to hold it closer to the dog, it really hurts your hand.

I have a bunch of different leashes: leather, nylon/cotton mix with a clip on each end, slip leads made of a variety of materials. My favorite by far are  my leather leashes. They are much easier on the hands and I feel like I have more control with them if one of my dogs decides to jerk at the end of the leash for something.

I have for Brownie a leash like this.

    Cuddles-

    Possum-

    Baxter-

    Bailey-

I went online and found dog leashes that look like the ones I have for my dogs. These are not mine but look exactly like them.

Brownie- I dont know the length or width.

Cuddles- 5/8" inch wide and was about 12 bucks.

    Possum- was about 6 bucks.

Baxter- 3/4" wide and 4 feet long.

    Bailey- i dont know

My favorite leash is one like this:

Toppaw used to make them and don't anymore -- the 'handle' is like a collar -- completely adjustable so you can open it up and clip it around your waist, or clip it on a doorhandle, or around my ankle.

I don't want to give the link because the guy technically competes with Dog.com -- but if you want it let me know.  Not expensive ($4.49 but his shipping is a bit steep), but man I love them!
