What Kind of Leash do you prefer ?

A 6 ft., 1/2" leather.  I usually hold the handle in my right hand and loop the leash around my left hand.  Max can't have the full 6 ft. on a walk, but I give him some slack when he's hanging out at the bottom a a tree scoping out the squirrels in the branches.

I only use one leash for Apollo...it's a 6 foot, 1 inch, brown leather leash made by Remington with a brass clip, I bought it at Bass Pro Shops. I got it when I got him. I love it, it's very soft!

Even though they all have fancy leashes and collars too, I like a good old fashioned 6' leather leash with braided ends.  They sell them at J & J Dog Supply.  Sioux still has the leash I bought for her when she was a puppy almost eight years ago.  Saddle soap!

I have a lot of different ones for different purposes....

For daily walks I use a 3'x1/2" leather lead (the Bridgeport "patrol" lead with the ring)

For training I use a very thin (1/6";) 6' soft leather lead, usually most of it drags behind me, or just a 3" leather loop tab attached to the collar

For biking I use a thick braided nylon lead, 6', attaches to a harness

For shows (dog is not on lead in the ring) I use a very thin (1/6";) 4' leather slip lead

Also have lots of nylon slip leads for agility, a toy dog show lead for when we did novice, longer lines...

I use a 6 foot 1/2 inch nylon leash. I don't like those flexi leashes. It teaches the dogs to pull.

I have different leashes for different things I'm doing with the dogs.  When are going for a walk I use the flexi.  I like them to have the ability to run around and explore and have fun, yet the ability for me to pull them in quickly is nice.  We have our leather leashes in different lengths for obedience stuff and our short little handle-leash for agility when we aren't off leash.  We have nylon leashes that we use when we visit PetCo or one of the other dog-friendly stores.  No chain leashes in our house - I hate them too.

Like most, I have a variety of leashes.  For rally, pet stores, and most public outings, I use a 6' leather leash.  For walks around the neighborhood, I usually use a flexi, because there's sections where Honor can have more play in the leash.  For parks and lake areas, I use a 50' nylon long lead, which is as close to off-leash as Honor's ever going to get in a non-secure area.  Honor also gets the 50' at my mom's house, which has a huge backyard, but no fence.

Overall, I love the leather lead the best.  But I'm thinking I might pick up one of the short leashes for when we start agility.

There has been new studies showing that flexi's actually encourage pulling since its is a resistance type leash in general.

Think about it for a moment....if the dog wants more slack he needs to pull a bit for the leash to give him more slack.....thus reinforcing the pulling behavior.

Amelia will not walk on ANYTHING but a flexilead.  You have to chase her down if you are even going to attempt a different leash and then she will just cower down low to the ground and not move.  Even though she has a beautiful ella lead.  Emma on the other hand does terrible on a flexilead. She has too much control and will end up attacking Amelia or me or trying to tie herself up in it and eating it.  She gets an ella lead, but you still have to watch that she doesn't slip her collar.

I have no use for chain leashes as well.  Used them way back in the day, but never liked them.  Currently don't have one.

Have you tried a snug fitting martingale collar? Seriously... they're the BEST for dogs who slip collars. I had a dog who would even slip a harness, but she couldn't get out of her martingales.

For Zack I use a 4ft, red cotton webbed leash.  I have to agree with the others about the flexi-leads.  I don't like them at all.  This is the leash I use for Zoe:

We don't have a preference on the leash only the collars.  Our leashes are Nylon and leather.

For Newton, it depends: If I am going to be holding the leash the whole time I will use a retractable lead. If I will need to tie him up, then I put a harness around him, gerryrigged from 2 different sized metal collars and use a metal lead...this may sound odd, but he's eaten and escaped out of 3 leashes, and 2 harnesses made out of nylon. He's quite determined when he wants to be.

I use 6 ft by either 3/4 in or 1/2 in nylon leashes for my girls.

I have a 6 foot leather hunting lead that I love. I have not been able to find another like it. It has snaps on both ends and places along the leash at in three places to hook the snap to.
