Sleep Softly Sweet Brutus

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    Sleep Softly Sweet Brutus

Today was one of the hardest days of my life. I made the decision to send Brutus to the Bridge this morning.

Monday, he was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma of the liver & spleen. He was still feeling good, so we decided to take him home until he told us that it was time. He had a good day Tuesday. In fact, he felt well enough to chew my iphone, & swipe a bag of treats. Yesterday, he felt good enough to go for a short walk with me, & he happily ate any "junk food" that I offered, as well as his regular meals. This morning, he happily woke up from his sleeping spot between DH & I. (Getting to sleep between us was something he had been angling for for the past 2 years. :) Even though he was happy, he told us that it was time.

Walking into the house without him here is so strange. For the past 2 years, I've walked in to a happy, grunty, nub waggin, kidney bean dancing fool. Now, he's gone.

Sleep soflty sweet boy. You were my snuggle buddy, my protector, & my own personal comedian. I will miss you more than words will ever express.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Amanda.  He was a lucky boy to have had you pick him up 2 years ago.  He knew much love.

    Rest easy, Brutus.

Amanda, I'm so sorry to hear of your lose. What a fine looking chap Brutus was! I can tell by this picture how much love this dog received and gave. I think we can all relate to your feeling of walking in the house. It feels very lonely. Fill your heart with sweet memories.

    Run Free beautiful boy.

    Run free, Boo. Broken Heart

I think getting hit by a car that day was the luckiest thing that could have ever happened to you. What an amazing time you had with your family.

I have to agree Janice.  Just think of all the great things that have happened in the past two years.  Brutus hit the big time when he bounced off that truck.

Run fast, eat everything you want and sleep peacefully.  There's a girl named Greta that just arrived yesterday.  She'll be happy to snuggle with you.

Some dogs we have for their whole lifetime and we love them

Some dogs we have for what seems an "instant" or a season of time ... and they can almost be life-changing in their impact on our life.

A dog close to our heart may be long-lived or short lived or we may have them a longer time or a shorter time -- but often the "amount of time" has nothing to do with what that dog means to us, what we've learned, or how we've loved.

Boo you were an original.  I sat and cried at work hoping no one would come in my office.  Boo the posts here and on FaceBook -- you meant a lot not only to your family but to others as well.
