Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

please welcome Francis, less than 36 hours old.

We did an emergency c-section/spay at the clinic on Saturday at around noon- the dog had been in an accident which resulted in a crushed pelvis and couldn't finish delivery. All but 3 of the pups were stillborn. The 3rd died shortly after birth, and the 2nd seemed to be failing.  The owners left with a baby girl and their mother dog all fixed up.

Later, I went to clean surgery, and found the 2nd puppy, a boy, still breathing.  I took him home.  From the start, there was trouble- he didn't want to eat and seemed to be having some seizures, but I kept at it and he seemed to be improving.  The vet saw him today and recommended sub-q fluids, which we did, and then he really perked up.

But this evening, around 7:30, he decided this world wasn't cutting it for him and ran off to The Bridge.

I can't believe how sad I am.  I knew his prognosis was poor and I did everything in my power, but I still feel like I failed.

It was so sad to see the life pass out of his little body.  He tried so hard to hang on.  Poor little guy; I hope I didn't prolong any pain for him....

When they try and fight so hard ... it IS so hard.  We get attached so easy and sometimes it's just that very "will to live" that reaches out to us.

You didn't fail ... you gave him loving arms and a caring heart behind him which so few ever get.  And sometimes I think it's a merciful angel who operates on orders from the Alpha of all Alphas who calls just a bit louder out of love and says "C'mon ... you can run here ... it's a better world with no pain waiting ..."

But in those moments he perked up he knew love ... and that's the gift you gave.  Thank you.  You didn't fail.  you simply loved ... and that's a gift beyond all else.

    *hugs*

Oh, Sara, I'm so sorry.  You can know for sure that every single moment of that little guys life was full of concern and love and care and support.  Not many dogs get that.  I think he just ran over the bridge to keep his littermate company - and to encourage him/her to come back again with him for new lives in healthy bodies so that they can both know the love of good people.

HUGS to you tonight.  Special "sweet baby boy" kisses to little Francis.  He was LOVED every moment.
