A poem for those who have lost their beloved dogs.

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    A poem for those who have lost their beloved dogs.

    For those of you who have lost a beloved dog, my heart goes out to you.  There can be a hole in your heart for a long time that is hard to fill.

    For those who have had to make the final decision to release your dog from pain, my heart aches for you.  I had to make the decision for my 15 year old cat who had cancer and it was so heartwrenching, I just couldn't believe it.

    This poem I came across really struck home with me and I'd like to share it.  I hope it helps those of you who have had to make the decision.  Please excuse me if it's been posted before.

    The Last Battle
    If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
    And pain should keep me from my sleep,
    then you must do what must be done
    For this, the last battle, can't be won.

    You will be sad, I understand,
    Don't let the grief then stay your hand,
    For this day more than all the rest
    Your love and friendship stand the test.

    We've had so many happy years,
    What is to come can hold no fears.
    You'd not want me to suffer so;
    When the time comes, please let me go.

    Take me where my needs they'll tend
    And stay with me, if you can, to the end.
    Hold me firm and speak to me
    Until my eyes no longer see.

    I know in time, you will see,
    It is a kindness you do for me.
    Although my tail its last was waved,
    From pain and suffering I've been saved.

    Don't grieve that it should be you,
    Who must decide this thing to do,
    We've been so close, we two, these years;
    Don't let your heart hold any tears.

    Smile, for we walked together for a little while.

    You know ,I don't know why I read this at night--I get all depressed and cry like I just did before reading about a poor little one with cancer.That poem is so beautiful,I'm sure it helps many people when they have to make that final decision.
