Permanent the guinea pig

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    Permanent the guinea pig

For those of you who remember Permanent's long story about her rescue, her blindness, and her ovarian cysts...

Perm died last night, almost six months to the day after her cage mate, Temporary, died. That's an interesting little fact considering they were six months apart, so that put Perm right about four years old. She didn't have an easy start in life, being born blind and was about to be returned to a supplier for breeding. God knows she wouldn't have made it very long there. I had to syringe feed her water when I first got her until she got used to her cage, but once she adapted to things, there was no stopping her. She never really knew she was blind, and she was always the most active of all my pigs. Until yesterday, she continued to chow down on anything we fed her, and she could demolish a pile of hay in no time. In her younger days, Perm came with me when I did education programs at local schools, but I retired her when she developed ovarian cysts that couldn't be removed without seriously risking her life on the table. She lived almost two years after the cysts were first drained, and despite the alternative drainings, they turned to cancer. I know she had a good life with me, and I know she's better off now, but it's still sad to see my little fighter lose in the end.

Oh, I'm really sorry.  I had a guinea pig before Willow and I enjoyed following Temp and Perm's stories.  I know you must be so sad.  But, it makes me smile to know that they are together again now.  I'm sure they really missed each other.

oh, Marlania, I am so sorry.  That was a tough blow when Temp left for the other side...[:(] This has got to be so sad for your family.  Sending hugs.

Um... do you say "scramble free" instead of run free?  Either way - I hope she and Temporary are enjoying all the great things life has to offer over the bridge and free of discomfort or pain.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about little Perm.  I didn't know the background story of her rough beginning -- you were surely the angel in her life, and she was so very lucky to have you caring for her.  I remember you telling us about Temp's death . . . . it's comforting to think they're together again.  What sweet little critters they must've been.  I always enjoyed their photos.

I'm sorry you've lost your tiny friend.  Take care.

Run free, little Permie.  I'm sure that Speedy and Bullet will go find Temporary for you and you can all munch the green grass together at the Bridge till your mommy finds you again someday.

Run free, Permanent.  You and Temporary can snuggle again.[sm=angel.gif]

Marlania, I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry to hear about your piggie's passing.  They are wonderful companions that are often underrated.

I'm so sorry. You gave her an amazing life. She's scampering free with Temp, now. [sm=angel.gif]
