Baylor was a hard to dog to live with. Considering all his medical problems that would be expected. It started with a retained testicle (all the way up to the spine) which triggered my noticing an odd position to his tail carriage; which resulted in an xray to find hip displasia; which led to a diagnosis of spina bifida in the 7th lumbar vertibrae and invasive surgery at seven months old. Then we got the food allergies, the autoimmune disorder which caused him to shed his toenails to the quick.
He was one of the smartest dogs I have ever owned. When we brought him home in ungodly heat, he parked over the airconditioning vent within minutes of finding it. After being four days, he had just woken up. I called to him to get him out the door. I made the mistake of saying "hurry up", the potty word. He stopped his purposeful little trot, stared at me as if to say, "Are you sure?". Squatted and then continued his way to the door. No doubt in my mind as he never had another accident until his spine started deteriorating in old age.
He got my kid through those painful teenage years and kept my dad walking when he first moved in with us. He convinced my son in law, that big dogs were cool and he needed to have one to balance out the pocket dog they started with.
He lived to pass his thirteenth birthday. Not a bad number in this case.
