Lili, the sweet little black cocker spaniel

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

Lili, the sweet little black cocker spaniel

I received some very sad and shocking news from my friends today.  I posted about their dog, Lili, last summer who ruptured a disk and had to have emergency back surgery.  It was a scary time and a rough few weeks, but she came through it with flying colors.  We just saw Lili last Friday, and she was as playful and happy to see us as ever.  We were talking about how amazing it was that it was like nothing was ever wrong with her.

Wednesday night, my friends noticed she was acting like she did when her disk ruptured.  They gave her some meds to make her comfortable until they could get to the vet in the morning.  She woke them screaming in pain, and they rushed to the emergency vet in the wee hours of the morning.  She was euthanized there.  I haven't talked to my friend yet - her email was brief.  When I think we can both handle talking, I'll find out what happened.  I don't know if they determined something was untreatable or what.

I'm absolutely heartbroken for them.  Some of you may also remember that I posted about their precious Basset Hound, who was Tonka's last girlfriend.  She was sick for a very long time (from puppyhood to age 3) and eventually diagnosed with a horrible incurable disease that prevented her from absorbing proteins.  Our friends knew she was dying, and adopted a pair of stray cockers about a year ago (Lili and Duncan, who they believe to be siblings).  Zoie the Basset was euthanized less than a year ago, followed by Lili's surgery, and now her sudden passing.

My only comfort is that Lili has at least 2 special friends to greet her at the Bridge - my Tonka never met her, but I know he and Zoie are inseparable at the dining establishments at the Bridge, so they will make sure Lili is okay.

Lili, we had only begun to get to know you -- I'm glad you found such a wonderful Mom and Dad to give you and Duncan a loving home after you were abandoned by someone.  Your pretty, jet black fur and curly ears will struggle to remain shiny with all the slobber from Tonka and Zoie flying around.  We'll make sure Duncan has as much love as possible as he tries to adjust to life without his little shadow.

You'll be missed sweetheart.  Please give Tonka and Zoie our love and tell them how much we miss them.

I am so very sorry for your friends...I know what they are going thru because I lost my greyhound,  Faith, today also.  She was 13 and sick from kidney problems so my heart goes out to them with many special prayers...I am sure that Lilli was there to greet Faith this morning to make her feel at home...

I also agree she's in good paws with Tonka.
Run free to your paradise now Lili, job well done here.

So sorry for your friends - sounds like they have perhaps been a safe haven for the transition these dogs have had to make before they go over the bridge.  That love and caring will be rewarded some day soon.
    Run free, little Lili!

Tacran, please tell your friends that Lili is joining Tuffy (a fellow cocker) at the Bridge.  How terribly scary and sudden and sad for your friends.  I'm so very sorry.  Clearly, Lili was in terrible pain and the cushion here is she no longer is.  However, I'm sure the shock and grief aren't helped too much with that thought yet.  What is obvious is how much she was loved and cared for which means, no matter how brief, she led a full, happy life.  Blessings to you and your friends, and of course, to little Lili.

I know that scream all too well. It is undescribeable. She is no longer in pain and that's the most important thing. No more pain Lili, run all you want.

Thank you for all your kind words.  I spent some time with my friends' other dog, Duncan, the day before yesterday.  He's doing quite well - happy to have company, and seems to be in good spirits.  My friends say he wanders around a bit, since Lili was the boss, and he isn't quite sure what to do without her lead.  I took him for a walk, and it seemed so weird to have him walking by himself - they were a little synchronized pair anytime they were out together.

I'm sure Lili is enjoying a full, active spiritual life with no pain and lots of special friends to play with.

Tracy, I'm so sorry to hear about Lili.  I can't believe how quickly this happened.  How awful to think she was doing so much better, that she was getting back to a normal, playful life only to have everything change.  My heart goes out to your friends and to you too.  I know how hard it is to see this happening to so many around you.

I know just how Duncan is still looking for Lili to show the way... Gracie did the same thing.  She didn't even bother to socialize even when we had company and usually, she's all over anybody in the house.  I bet Duncan was happy to get out for a walk with you.  [:)

Romp and Run Free, Lili  [sm=angel.gif]  It won't hurt anymore.
