Duncans Gone

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    Duncans Gone

He's the chocolate lab in my profile pic.

He was six years old and was struck by a car. He made it to to my driveway to die.

It took me three hours to dig his grave. He weighed 100lbs.

I have had 10 dogs in my life, and if one didn't come home, oh well, I mildly missed them for a few days.

Duncan was different. We bonded. He adored me. I loved him. He is the first animal in my 52 year life that I have grieved and mourned over.

I can't even speak about it with anyone, without getting choked up, and just blurt ou "I can't talk about it"

The only reason I can even type this is that none of you can see the tears.

I am so sorry for this unexpected heartbreak.  I am still reeling from losing my baby on July 11.  They are so much a part of us. And the house is so empty  without them.  I wish I had found this remedy called IGNATIA,,a  homeopathic remedy for grief and shock.  It helped me recover more than any other thing I found.  We know how you are feeling and feel your pain.   HUGS

I'm so sorry for what you are going through Randall, but if anyone understands your grief and loss, it's the people on this forum.  It's so much harder when it's sudden and unexpected - like you didn't have a chance to say Good-bye.  Run free, Duncan. [sm=angel.gif]

Thank you all, for yoour commmnets and condolences.

    Here are some interestersting observations:

Before I laid Duncan to rest, I let Bailey sniff him. He is the Maltese in my profile pic.

They had an ongoing challlange for dominance even though there was a 90lb weight difference. Bailey would jump, bark, nip, etc.

Bailey did a quick sniff, then walked away. He Knew.

Bay, my lab/ chow mix, did not have this opportunity. She was the omega.

After the burial, she immidiatlely found the spot where Duncan had lain overnight untill I buried him. I brought him there in my truck, so there was no trail.
She sniffed that area for several minutes, then started expanding her seaach radius to about 100 feet.

After 30 minutes of searching, I think she reached the conclusion Duncan was gone.

Her demeanor has changed. It was as if she became the alpha female.

People have told me she will continue to grieve over Duncan, but I think she has already resolved this matter.

I'm leaving my profiel pic inntact as a matter of respect.

    Thanks again,

    Randall
