Tranquilizers?

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

    Tranquilizers?

I have a senior dog who has had behaviour "issues" all his life and can not go to a vet. It is his time now to help him pass on. Someone from Animal Shelter is coming, and will give him a tranquilizer by needle in rump, then 20 mins later the last one in his paw.

I was wanting to have him sedated a bit for the visit, as he does not take kindly to strangers. Have heard of using Benadryl. Any suggestions?

You can use Rescue Remedy 1/2 hour - 1 hour before they come. It mellows you out.  You should take it too.  I gave my cat WALNUT 1/2 hour before to help him transition to the other side.  These are BACH flower esseneces you can buy at the health food store or Whole Foods.  They are liquid and you squirt an eye dropperfull on their gums, tongue or even rub some inside the ears or paws.  The main thing is to get them to lick it.   I know its very hard not to cry, but if you are sobbing it will be hard on the dog.   Tell him its OK to go now.  Our pets hang on too long and suffer more because you don't want them to leave.  IF you have ohter deceased pets,  call out to them to come and get your boy.  I asked my other cats for 2 days prior, to come and get their brother and I know they did.  Light a candle, play soft music.

    My thoughts are with you,,,HUGS

I don't know about Benadryl - do you have any Rescue Remedy?  It helps to calm them.

I'm sorry for the loss you are facing.

Why not call the animal shelter and ask them if they would like you to give him the Benedryl?
I'm sorry you are losing your friend, but it's nice to hear that you gave him a good home despite his problems.

Thankyou for the replys. You folks are very kind.

Yes, Hollysmom,  i have always read we can hold people back with our sorrow...i will remember it is the same with our animals. I have actually been concerned he will want to hang around in Spirit, as he always wants me within his sight/smell. I would like him to go on and have fun, visit, but not wait here forever.

There are a few doggieangels i can call on, and i will begin doing so now. Thanks everyone.

You are really doing this the best way, having the vet come to the house.  Every animal should go in their own home.  I had the best possible experience for the passing of my cat.  He was laying in his bed, covered with his blankets and warm.  The Walnut had made him drowsy.  The vet gave him the tranquilizer shot, let me say my goodbyes, then the pink shot .  God it was hard to be brave, he was my friend for 21 years since a kitten.  You are a good mom.  HUGS.

It's never easy, but what you are able to do by bringing the vet to your home makes it better, as Hollysmom has said.  It is so much less stressful for you and for your loved furkid; just more gentle.  Thinking of you and wishing you and your dog comfort and peace.

Wishing to thank everyone for their kind words and encouragment. My Ben Willy was helped to pass over 2 weeks ago now. It went well. My heart did not hold on to him, as i knew he had things to do, places to see. Ben and i were meant to be, so i tried to open my self up to whoever would be sent to me.

A week later i heard of a little gal (Doberman/Lab) at the Animal Rescue League, whose loving Dad passed away. This broke my heart. She is a big dog, and people were passing her by i was told. She was the only dog i requested to see, and i adopted her!  I really believe her Daddy in Heaven and Ben Willy were pulling strings to bring us together.

She came home with kennel cough along with her broken heart....and needed so MUCH love and attention,  and i cannot imagine what would have happened with her had we not found one another.

     Thanks "Dad" and BenWilly"!!!

I really think our little angels at the Bridge do have a hand in finding us another dog.  They know that we can't ever replace *them*, so they do it to insure another dog a home, and because they know that our homes are only houses without a dog living in them...perhaps we would be too heartbroken to do that, if they weren't guiding us from above:-))
