Hugh, I'm so sorry for your loss. We had to make a similar decision in January for our precious boy -- I know the heartbreak involved. It's awful to see them failing, and you hang on to the good days, until you realize they are few and far between. And even knowing the end is coming soon regardless of your decision, it isn't any easier to take those last steps.
Maxine was with you and your family a very long time, so I'm sure there are many, many wonderful memories to keep in your heart. But, for a while you may only feel deep sadness and loss as you try to get used to the space, physical and emotional, that she left behind. Tonka was our first dog, too, and the grieving process has been so difficult as we struggle to get used to a life without him beside us.
May you find both old friends and new friends at the Bridge, Maxine -- and run with a strong, healthy body once again. Watch over your family while they cry for you.
Best wishes to you and your family, Hugh.
