Run free my sweet Summer girl

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

Run free my sweet Summer girl

Summer Oct 1998 (gotcha month) until Nov 24 2011. Lost one of our dogs today...very suddenly. She had a good life and was almost 14 but that just doesn't make it any easier. She was doing great and had gone for several long walks the past couple of weeks. She did a 4 mile long walk, on a dog walk for lights on the lake, just last week. She'd had thyroid surgery this spring and perhaps some cells had already started somewhere else. I don't really know what the problem was that caused everything. I rushed her to the vet as she was acting extremely uncomfortable. At first look the vet thought it might be something spinal, but then we noticed that she was very pale in her mouth...not good at all. She drew some blood and then went out back to get the xray ready and I yelled to her that Summer was really struggling. We grab her up and got her on a table and started her on oxygen. She started to feel a bit better but then started struggling again and her heart beat was just not right. It was at that point that she helped me to decide it was time to let her go....it so sucks. The vet gave her the injection that would relax her and pretty much put her in a sleeping state and then they give the final injection. Well the first medicine really didn't work and so we finally gave her the final injection. Vet said that the way she acted with that first shot, she really felt she would have passed on her own quite shortly anyway. There was just nothing that we could do. We lost one of our other dogs on Mother's Day this year. She also had thyroid cancer. Anyway thanks for reading through this, it just helps to write it all down. I will so miss you my Summer. You were the best girl. You allowed so many little hands to pet you when you went into the schools, for the few education programs you went to. Everyone just loved you. We never did finish our Search and Rescue training but you sure were good at it...what a nose. You just amazed me at how far away you could pick up that air scent and off you would go.

    RIP my girl

I know that I'm not on here a lot and don't always get a chance to give my thoughts to others who have lost their beloved pets. Some times you just really need to write things out and thank you so much everyone for this community being here and giving me a place to do this. My Summer was a very special girl to me. I guess I have a hard time saying heart dog as I feel guilty to my other animals. They all are very special but Summer, though she loved everyone and anyone it was only when she knew I was right there with her. She would even be fussy about someone else walking her when there were a few of us walking together. I had to be on the other end of the leash, when I had to leash her anyway.

Thanks again everyone. I just don't know what to do with myself today, as mentally I just can't get started on any projects, and so keep coming back to the computer.

(((BIG HUGS)))  So sorry for your loss of Summer.  It's such a difficult thing to deal with.  It's been almost a month since I lost Tessy and I still have days that are tough!  The heart does heal and once the tears turn to smiles of all the good memories you've had with Summer then you'll know the heart is on the way to healing.

     My sympathies and condolences.

    Run fast and free Summer!

I'm so sorry Maureen. Having just lost Buffy a few weeks ago, I know some of what you're going thru. In our case, we had a very long time to prepare ourselves and I know that made a difference. Still, it's very sad. I get caught completely off guard at times when I look at a picture of Buffy and the tears come again. Only time will make this better for you, me, Johnny and anyone else with a recent loss like this. (((Hugs)))

    Run free Summer.
