When is it time?

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, whose original creator is unknown. The theme is of an other-worldly place to which a pet goes upon its death, eventually to be reunited with its owner.

We faced the same thing on July 26th. Now that it is done, and the initial sadness/shock/grief/guilt are past, I know in my heart it was the right thing to do. You have shown your love in the purest way possible. Bless you and Abbie..... I am sure she has forgiven you (what was there to forgive?)and she now exists in a pain free reality. Take heart my friend, you did the right thing.

Oh how my heart goes out to you. Last year our beagle, Sheba got sick with cancer. The only treatment for her could have killed her so we decided to keep her as happy and as comfortable as we could. However, we knew it was just a matter of time. Sheba was my husband's dog when we got married and he loved her more than his own life. She was the first dog I ever had and I loved her so much. I was dreading having to make that decision.

Tony and I decided to let her stay alive as long as she wasn't moaning in pain. She started turning away from her dog food but she would eat a Wendy's hamburger. So every day I would go up to Wendy's and get her a hamburger. I did that for about two weeks. I figured if she got a little joy from that it was worth it to do it.

Anyhow, one evening we had to carry her outside. She just sat there and didn't walk around. We carried her back inside. She sat there looking at us with the most heart-breaking look I have ever seen. I thought, how miserable is this dog and we just don't know it.

Well, the next day when we came home, nature had done what we dreaded having to do. She had died. It was one of the saddest days of my life, right up there with when my mother died and my brother died. There is still such a hole in my heart.

You did the right thing. If nature hadn't taken its course with Sheba we would have had to do the same thing, as painful as it would have been. Missing the dog is sad, but it is nothing compared to having them look at you and beg to be relieved of suffering.

Pets are a gift! Let us cherish them while we can and make their lives as happy as we can so that when they are gone we can know we gave back as much as we could.

My heart goes out to you.  We were faced with this decision a few weeks ago.  Know that her death was with dignity and love and always remember her to people.

My old cat, Misty, lived almost 17 years. When she was 16, she was diagnosed with dimished kidney function. The vet had me feed her a special food designed for that. Feb of last year, almost 17, on a Sunday, her kidneys failed completely. We went to an emergency vet in the next county south. They had a procedure that would make a little more comfortable for a while but it would only delay the inevitable. They let me hold her in my lap after they had the IV line started. I made the decision, they pressed the plunger, and she went to sleep one last time in my arms. And it hurt like a son-of-a-you-know-what. But it was the right thing to do.

Condolences and she is running free and loving you for it.

Run free sweet Abbie.  My thoughts are with you and your wife at this time. As difficult as it was, your decision was made as a result of your love for Abbie.  How right it was for her to have those she trusted most to help her in the most unselfish way.

I'm so sorry to hear about Abbie.  My heart goes out to you.  I know these early days and weeks will be terribly painful.  May you receive some comfort in the support of people here on this forum who understand what you're feeling.

Run free Abbie, and watch over your family as they try to face the days ahead without you.  You were clearly loved by devoted caretakers, and you'll now have lots of extra love to share with other animals you meet at the Bridge who weren't as blessed when they were on earth.  You'll be with lots of other sweet angels as you all wait to be reunited with your family someday.
