Maureen, I'm late seeing your thread about Summer, but I wanted to send my belated condolences. Like Cathy posted, we lost our dog after many weeks of failing health, so I guess you could say we were more "prepared" (although the loss is heartbreaking, no matter when or how it happens). I can't imagine what your experience was like to have to say goodbye so suddenly. It sounds like Summer had a long, happy life with you, and her age is a testament to the wonderful care she must've received as a member of your family.
The hole they leave behind never goes away completely, but with time its edges soften, and you find you can talk about your beloved dog without crying. Even after 5+ years, I still have triggers that will make me remember the loss like it happened yesterday, but it's much easier than it was in the early stages like you're going through. Remember that Summer is still with you in spirit -- your relationship with her doesn't end just because she's physically not here. Take care.
