    rwbeagles-Updating the Disneyworld thing

We decided to go NEXT year so as to have a ton more time to plan. We're putting our gov't check this spring into a savings account so it can grow a bit and we can't touch it LOL. The kids will be at a better age as well...esp Elias who seemed really not that interested this year.

I bought the Unofficial Guide and a Birnbaum's as well..and have read them both cover to cover. I found the Mousesavers website and bookmarked it and have picked out the important stuff...

    • Time of year (Oct/Nov)
    • Where to stay (on/off DW property)
    • what resort (Orleans Riverside)
    • what type of tickets and for how long

I am SO well prepared now the waiting will no doubt kill me! LOL. Thanks again all for the help you offered when I asked a few months back!

that should be bang in the middle of the Epcot Food & Wine Festival (that is a GOOD thing) -- so keep an eye on the Disney websites so you can plan which day you want to 'do' Epcot.  The food is really good (just don't bother to eat at WDW and eat for 2 days at Epcot *grin*) but there are also the free concerts as well (which range from 70's-90's groups. By then they ought to have some of the re-furbishing done.  Epcot has some nifty 3D stuff and more for the kids than you'd think.  WDW has had some major re-furbishment done as well so it should be a good time to go.

October/November is always my favorite -- the weather cools back to "deal-able" and gorgeous.  You'll still think it's plenty 'hot' but we locals come out of hiding in October finally LOL.

    HAVE FUN!!!!!

Do you have the dates for that Festival? The guidebooks said to AVOID that because of the crowds...but I'll be darned if they had dates..lol. Does it change yearly?

Why would ya AVOID the Food and Wine Festival? I've always wanted to check that out, it looks so cool! And I'm a local!

Gina, Oct/Nov is the absolute best time to go to Disney (eta- we've been there the beginning of Oct, second and third week of Nov, beginning of January and Easter time).  If you go in Nov, don't go the week of Thanksgiving.  The last time we were there, we went the week before that, and then went back Thanksgiving week.  What a difference!  Huge crowds, long lines, etc.  If you want to save some $$, look into the Holiday Inn that's just off Disney property.  It's very family oriented- down to a seperat diningroom for the kids (if they want to use it).  There is a plexi glass wall between it and the regular diningroom so you can see the kids.  If they opt to eat with Mom & Dad, the servers are all in training to be clowns, etc, and are very entertaining.  Oh, and they run buses to and from Disney every day.

what were the rates? you can PM if you prefer...

If it's close to the same I'd rather be on property still, I think. I read in the guide that the buses from off property places can be subject to traffic related delays...did you notice any of that?

YOU'RE STAYING AT PORT ORLEANS RIVERSIDE?!?!!? lol...sorry...I am a Disney *freak*...but that is where we stayed last spring break, and it is wonderful. Absolutely beautiful too. And it was always so quiet - a nice break from the noise level in the parks, that's for sure! Be sure to check out the Riverside Mill, where you can eat...try the garlic bread...mmm, I am so jealous! Seriously, the resort is amazing. The flowers...the river...the bridges...the Mill...the fountains...I think you made a good choice needless to say! :D

It tends to change every year because they keep adding to it.  To be honest -- the people that are going JUST for the festival aren't going "on" as much stuff.  I've never found the lines to be bigger then than other times.  Now what micksmom says about Thanksgiving (or ANY holiday) is true.  It's mobbed.

Saturday is always the biggest day at ANY park.  But the whole reason they've come up with this is just because Oct/beg. Nov are 'off season' -- but Bike-toberfest (in Daytona) is in October so that likely will also increase the crowds at Disney so you might go 'around' that (altho that is truly something to see, but maybe for Mom and Dad rather than the kids -- part of Bike-toberfest and Bike Week can tend to get a bit X-rated LOL)

It's just such a joke with David and I.  The food at WDW is SO bad ... it is seriously SOOOOO bad.  And the food all over Epcot is SO good.  LOL.  We've actually been known to go TO the park and go in JUST to have dinner somewhere (my favorite place to go in the world for my birthday is Le Cellier in Canada at Epcot.  the MOST awesome steaks on the planet!!!)

Le Cellier is BUSY -- if you want to go to Le Cellier in July you make reservations NOW.  (Seriously)  And it is pricey.  It's probably *the* most popular of the Epcot restaurants.

It's funny -- I'm not into the whole food & wine thing (I'm not going to stand in line for 20 minutes for one thing at each stand).  BUT we have a blast at the concerts.  We saw Sister Sledge there one year and it was a blast.  But we go to a lot of them (annual passes ARE worth it for us).

    Planning such stuff IS fun!!!

I can't remember how much it was, just that it was cheaper than staying in Disney.  I just realized how long ago that trip was- 1995!  Indifferent  Wowza, that was awhile ago.  LOL  As for traffic, it wasn't bad.  I think it took about 10 minutes to get to the Disney gates.  We could actually see the Hard Rock Cafe from the hotel, that's how close we were.  I can't remember if they ran more then one bus (time wise) because we always left first thing in the morning.  But I'd imagine,if there were a later bus, it would get caught in traffic.

Just adding that Le Cellier is awesome!  We ate there in September and it was soo nice.

Given that I LIVE here *sigh* -- traffic has increased down there in the past 10 years.  It COMPLETELY hinges on how far away something is.  Shoot -- you can SEE I-4 from Universals parking garage but by the time you do all the one way streets it can take you 15 minutes to get TO Interstate 4.

If Disney is all you're gonna do -- if you are going to pass on Universal and Sea World/Busch, etc. ... then stay ON Disney property.  They have monorail transport and constant shuttles and boats back and forth all the time.  You can go to WDW for the day and stop and take a nap and then do Epcot for dinner & fireworks.

My folks have even done the tourist thing and stayed ON Disney property and truly figured it well worth it.  Just because - particularly when you have kids -- EVERYONE gets sooo incredibly tired that being able to sit and *relax* and not worry if you're gonna miss something because of traffic or will the bus actually COME.  You just throw it in a heap on the boat or monorail and chill til you get where you're going.  They've got 'easy in' sections (like the International Gateway which no one BUT guests are allowed to use anymore) that bypasses all the huge lines, etc. getting in.

In the wake of 9/11 ALL the parks have inspections of all bags, purses, etc. coming into the parks -- it takes time.  If you've rented a stroller at one you get a pass to just 'pick one up' elsewhere with no big hassle.  if you buy stuff they'll take it TO your room for you so you don't have to carry it.

Dime for dime I can't argue which is 'cheaper' -- BUT we're at those parks a lot and I see the people who are jus SO tired and no one is enjoying NOTHING because the kids are too tired but Mom wants to SEE IT ALL before they leave.  And then I see the people sailing in late afternoon because they've come from a resort on property and everyone's happier because the hassle's less.  So I think it kinda comes down to how much more you may *enjoy* things if you can afford TO stay on property.

     Does that make sense?

If you're going to do Disney AND Universal -- you'll still see transports going between (they ARE realistic -- they realize people want to do it all)

But I've seen enough broken down busses and David and I always say "whoo, I bet THOSE folks aren't happy!"   If it's Disney or Universal owned property trust me -- they're going to have another transport there PRONTO.  But just busses from ABC Hotel? Probably not so much.  Maybe ... but ... it could be iffy.

And ... while I'm talkin here -- BEWARE of so called freebie tickets.  Some of these 'resorts' OFF property are timeshares in disguise.  And they'll give you 'free' Disney or universal tickets but you have to sit thru a four hour presentation and major selling pressure to buy their timeshare.

A timeshare can be a good thing for some people (my husband works in that industry but we do NOT have one) -- but you see signs all the time for 'free' or 'discount' tickets but people are actually paying dearly by giving up their vacation time to "see" a presentation that may take up the better part of a whole day.

I have to admit that one of my favorite things about going to Orlando wasn't even in Orlando. Big Smile It was cruising down to Cocoa Beach every other day.  It's (at least it was then) a mellow, laid back place - a good spot to get away from the frantic pace of the Disney/Epcot/Universal Studios. I remember they had some fun little stores, a 24 hr. surf shop and a great Mexican restaurant right on the beach.
