Premium dry food for pup w/sensitive tummy

Sooooo many choices....soooo much information.....need help....brain hurts!! Tongue Tied

My 5 month old (today!) pup has a bit of a sensitive stomach, and I would like to transition him to a premium dry food.  Any suggestions/recommendations?

I'd prefer something that is relatively easily acquired.  Even though I live in a large metro area, there aren't that many places that carry brands such as the Natura products.  I was looking at Eagle Pack or Natural Balance, as they are available at Petco.  Eagle Pack puppy has beet pulp, though, and I hear it is somewhat controversial.  Any opinions here?

Thanks in advance to all you nutrition gurus!!!

If you have a Petsmart, you can get Blue Buffalo Lamb and Rice puppy.

You might want to look at a simpler food though, such as California Natural or the Natural Balance allergy lines that are one carb and one protein source.

The foods I recommend to people at PETCO are:

    Natural Balance

    Blue Buffalo

    Solid Gold

    Halo

Other foods that PETCO doesn't sell that I do like are:

    Natura Products

    Eagle Pack

    Orijen

    Taste of the Wild

There's nothing wrong with beet pulp if it's used in the correct proportions within the food.

    An exerpt from the http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=dog_food_reviews

Beet pulp gets its bad reputation undeservedly, which is the reason it’s not listed under Ingredients to avoid on this site.

It is a gentle, beneficial source of fiber that is not only generally very well tolerated, but it also has specific properties that make it suitable as a source of nutrition for the beneficial bacteria that reside in the intestinal tract (in a supplement you would call this a "prebiotic";). The same people who malign beet pulp also often state rice bran is a better fiber supplement, but in truth it's a much harsher kind of fiber and may lead to vomiting and diarrhea in sensitive dogs or if it is used in too large amounts.

Eagle Pack makes a nice product, plus those foods mentioned in prior posts are good suggestions ,as well.

    What are you currently feeding?

Thanks!!  Pom, Petco's website has Eagle Pack available online.  Is it not available in the stores?  I haven't looked for it specifically while I've been in there.  Petco is so much closer to me than Petsmart, so I'd rather go there if I can.  Blue Buffalo is good, too?  Cool.  California Natural is a Natura product, no?  Not too accessible around where I live.  But at least now I have a short list, and I can experiment if need be.

Thanks for the info on beet pulp.  I feel better about it.

Ha!  I knew someone would ask what he's currently eating.  Please don't yell...he's on Purina One puppy right now.  Hence, the reason I want to switch him to something else.  I knew nothing about dog nutrition when I first got Harry, so bad mommy, yes, but smarter mommy now!!

Look for something similar in fat and protein levels (and calorie density) if he's a sensitive kid. That will likely help the transition. If you were to go from a food that has 300 calories per cup to a food that has 550, you'd almost certainly get runny poops, and maybe some vomiting, too.

Yes it is available ONLINE but we do not carry it in our store.

PETCO is what we call a "starter store" and it's actually very hard for us to get good commercial natural dog foods. It took a lot of effert just to get Natural Balance and Solid Gold I guess (according to GM).

Stores will have variance; check out your local PETCO to be sure.

    Thanks for the advice everyone!!

I'll probably have to keep Harry on the current food for a couple more weeks.  I don't have enough in the bag I have right now to transition him properly (actually only a little more than enough in there for tonight's dinner, about 3/4 of a cup), so I'll have to buy another small bag of the Purina before I can do the switch.

He is prone to vomiting more than runny poops, so I will heed the caloric advice.  I don't mind experimenting a bit to get him on good stuff that won't upset his tummy.

I'll call my local Petco, too, to check on brand availability.  I know they have Natural Balance; I've seen it in there.  I'll ask them about the others.

    Thanks again!!

Sorry to bug you guys again.

Now my question is - how do I decide what ingredient combo to use?  For example, I was on Natural Balance's website, and checking out their allergy line.  They have several combos (duck & potato, sweet potato & fish, and sweet potato & venison).  Is it pretty much a guess here to see what tastes he might like, or is one better than another for specific food allergies/sensitivities?  His main symptom is vomiting, which he hasn't done in a while, not since I last gave him a wee bit of peanut butter...no more of that!  But, he also has some dandruff/dry skin and a little itching, which I hear fish is good for.  So, I'm thinking a variety with fish, maybe?

Natural Balance products are the only kind I will use (kibble, can, treats)

I own every single Allergy Formula Variety and I feed my little girl a new flavor ever day.

(i.e. Mon - Duck, Tues - Venison, Wed - Fish, etc)

Try them all! See which one is the best for your dog. :o) Or you can spoil him like I do mine, hehe...

Awesome!  Hee hee...I rather enjoy spoiling my little guy. :)

I think a lot of members rotate foods, so if you find several that work for you...all the better.  Variety is a good thing!  (If he can handle it of course).

I heard someone say recently that they saw a Taste of the Wild stand at Petco or PetSmart so it's worth looking for it.  The bags are pretty colorful so once you see them they really stand out on the shelves :)

Look at California Natural Lamb and rice Puppy....   I know some people who feed it and their pups look great !

    http://www.californianaturalpet.com/products/default.asp?id=4

It's been tested also which is important..   You wouldn't believe how easy it is to go into a small boutique pet store and get special orders. Their distributors carry a lot more than small stores can put on the shelf.

But if you have Eagle Pack sold nearby it's an excellent food. Beet Pulp is used to help retain water in the gut . It is great stuff. Some people knock it due to misunderstanding of why it's used in their formulas. Try the Natural it is a great sensitive food.
