Ideas for ID tags

    Ideas for ID tags

I'm getting a new tag for Sierra - one that lays flat on the collar rather than dangling from it.

Any creative suggestions for what to put on the tag? I'm putting her name, and a couple of phone numbers, but I can't really think of anything else I might want to add. So any suggestions are appreciated Smile

Mine reads (had it made before I changed Kenya's name)

    "CHOPPER"
    [my name]
    [my address]
    [my phone number]

    other side....

    "CHOPPER"
    D.O.B 29 Oct 2003
    IF FOUND PLEASE CALL
    [my phone number]

I'm going to get her a tag with her new name and maybe add her registration numbers (microchip and AKC and/or UKC) and maybe have it say "RABIES VACC" or something to indicate she is already vaccinated.

My cats tags are one-sided.  They have their names, INDOOR ONLY, my phone number.

I have the same kind. Mine say

    • Dog's name
    • Home again microchip
    • Home phone
    • Vet phone

I like the idea of having the primary tag phone number be a cell phone.  That way you can look for the dog and still get calls from anyone who found it.  A vet number lets authorities check for current rabies info.

I would also include the phrase "Needs heart meds".  That discourages people from keeping a dog they like.  One forum member got her dog back because she included that phrase.  For her dog the phrase was true, but it doesn't have to be.

I would never include a home address.  Unless you have an unlisted home phone number, I would not include that either because the home address can be looked up.

I do not want someone unexpectedly showing up at my door just because they found my dog.  I want to meet the person at a public location or at least arrange a time and have someone else with me.

Yes, I guess I am a little paranoid.  My house has been broken into twice.  I have had a robber put a knife to my throat.  One of my sisters walked into her apartment living room early one morning and discovered a man naked from the waist down.  The same sister had a soon-to-be-ex come to the office where she worked carrying a gun.

I use my parent's home address and phone number b/c I've moved 6 times in 1.5 years so mine is never the same.  I asked them and they were OK with it.  They are also my home address on the microchip records.

Having id tags made is really cheap.....I think if any of the info changes it is very important to update the tag.....can save your pet's life.......

The AKC also offers a different locating system, once the dog is registered, one can pay an additional amount and register the dog for pet recovery, and then one will get an additional tag....

Snownose, I don't even have a phone and we are rarely home, so that's why I use my parent's info.  They have a home phone, my dad works from home, and my mom only works part time so she is home every morning until noon and then returns at 6.  They know I use their info on my tags so if someone called them about a lost pet, they would not be surprised and would be able to react a lot sooner than I would, not knowing someone is trying to find me.

Also for ID purposes, I looked at each pet and made a mental list of unique marks (Kenya has a small scar on her snout, a blat spot waaaay back on her tongue, and a white patch of fur so low on her chest you don't usually see it).  I know if I ever found a dog, I would not turn it over to just anyone.  People making claims would have to be able to give specifics about the dog's description.

Liesje....using a number that happens to be your parents, or you doesn't really matter, as long as the number is a current one......I was referring to folks that would move or change numbers....actually, using your parents number is a good idea.......I have used my MIL as an emergency contact, for the reason that she sits by the phone....it happens to be her life.....lol

     My dogs have:

    Dog Name

Both DH and my cell phone numbers, and

    REWARD.

Although, the "needs heart meds" is a good idea and I might change "REWARD" to that. I've always sort of wondered if having "Reward" on there might actually encourage someone to steal one of them with the hopes of collecting reward money.

Since Chief is outside 24/7 and Pyrs have a tendency to roam, he has an extra tag on his collar, in case he ever happens to get out, that says: "I am a working dog. I will not work for anyone but my family. Please take me home." which I HOPE would discourage anyone who found him from keeping him. Although the fact that he'll be about 130 pounds, not housetrained, and unsocialized to strangers might do the trick anyway. Stick out tongue

Yikes janet, I wouldn't include the address either if I'd gone through that. I have had people bring back my husky though and tie her up in my back yard while I was at work. She got loose while I was getting ready for work, and my boss at the time would not let me take time off work to look for her. Thankfully someone found her, read the address and brought her home.

    Willow's reads

    And, then my cell phone

Max actually has more ID than I do. Smile He has his rabies tag, his county ID tag, a tag with his name, my name, phone & address and his Home Again chip tag.  Twice while the fence was being replaced he managed to get out and took himself down to the park at the end of the street (the same route we take on a walk) - the first time a man called me from his cell and I ran down there and got him & the second time my oldest DS saw someone walking him back down our street. Lori, I like that phrase "If I'm alone I'm lost."  That lets people know right off the bat that the dog isn't usually out wandering.

I was going to get that done yesterday and the guy at my local Pet Supplies Store (where I was getting it) said not to for that exact reason! So I didnt.

For now it just has her Name and my cell # on it. I will update it when she gets a microchip. And I do like the needs meds idea. I might do that too.

    I have (for example):

    Nikki

    $$REWARD$$

    *Needs Meds*

    555-555-5555

She does not need medication, but, I know people are less inclined to keep a dog if they think it needs medication.
