I'm stuck in New Jersey (Xeph)

What a sh*tty situation! Why are Jons parents kicking you out?

They just don't want me here anymore

IF I can pull the rear seats out of the rental, yes, Delphi can ride.  But I have no cell phone with me (I need it for safety reasons), I DO NOT have all of my possessions from my old van, my mother is sending me the title to it (I wouldn't be here to receive it).  A friend of mine mailed me a cell phone (Prepaid) TODAY so I can have one in the event of an emergency....if I leave Sunday, I will have no way to contact anybody if I have trouble.

How rude!! They don't want you there? They don't care about their sons feelings?

    • Gold Top Dog

They can't just let you stay a couple of days more?  Are either of the dogs able to ride loose in the car so you can have more room?  You can ship most of your possessions through the US Postal service (It's not that much).

This might be really stretching it, but if they're that desperate to get you out of the house right now it might be worth a shot... do you think there's any way they might pay for a couple nights for you in a hotel right there so you can at least be there to get the cell phone/stuff your mom mailed?  It might be worth it to hunt around for the cheapest options in the area just in case.  The idea of you traveling like that with so much going on and under so much stress without an emergency phone is worrying...  It blows my mind that people would be so relentlessly uncaring in a situation like this.

As far as Delphi's situation goes - also stretching it (and requiring more lenience from these guys which it sounds like you're not likely to get) - but could Jon hold on to Delphi for the couple of days until she can get to that foster home?  Can his parents put up with just a few more days of only her being there as long as they know she is definitely and 100% certainly going to a designated location at such and such time on such and such day.  That is provided Jon is there to be with her so that she's not alone with them for most of the time...I would be afraid of what they would do ugh.  If they could get you set up in a hotel nearby that would solve both the cell phone and Delphi's issue I think.. as long as you're there until Wednesday I guess, right?

Does Jon have any friends in the area who might be able to help out?  That's grasping at straws I guess, I'm sure you have probably already tried all this stuff.

I hope you get everything worked out into a do-able situation... it sounds like the worst of the worst kind of thing to be stuck in the middle of, but you'll get through it somehow if you're determined enough...  I wish I wasn't so far away, otherwise I'd be more help.

I can't imagine what could set his parents off like this.  But, how about Jon, can you borrow from him instead of his parents?  Hope you get home soon whatever happens.

    No

What was the original plan of you being in NJ with Jon?

Get a job, stay for a couple of weeks to earn gas money/hotel money, and go home.  ....And then the transmission in my car went kaput.

Didn't he discuss your being there with his parents? I'd assume they'd have expected you'd need a place to stay as well

He did.  And out of the blue last night, Jon's dad claimed that he said I could stay until the 15th.  Nothing of the kind was ever stated to either of us.

They can't just let you stay a couple of days more?

Jon's dad says no.  We're going to be working on him tomorrow as well as me trying to pack...but Sunday is NOT reasonable.

Are either of the dogs able to ride loose in the car so you can have more room?

Strauss can, Delphi cannot, but I will admit I'm not comfortable with Strauss riding loose for 4+ hours.

Does Jon have any friends in the area who might be able to help out?

    No :(

Jon and I may well end up, erm...."camping", because Sunday....I cannot get everything together for Sunday.  There are things I NEED from my car (like the rabies certs for Moose).  Delphi needs to be microchipped and probably REvaccinated.

But, how about Jon, can you borrow from him instead of his parents?

No.  He has the same money issues as me....

    This is all a MESS.

I would just let them ride loose with leashes on, you can strap them to the oh *** handles. It is not ideal but effective. When we moved here Babe rode in the front of a moving van for 5 hours, and she did not mind, we did stop and let her stretch often.

I do not know anyone in that stretch of the world or I would help you Xeph.

Xeph, I'm so sorry that you're having to deal with this.

Is anyone on a transport list for that area?  Maybe someone could find Delphi a ride home with someone doing a transport...

    • Gold Top Dog

    I'm thinking for you Xeph. . .

Does anyone from your dog club in Wisconsin happen to know anyone in NJ that you could stay with??

Here's the other thought, I know that in a real pinch, I could probably crash where I work.  Is that an option for you?

Can Strauss wear a car harness/seatbelt?  It takes up a LOT less room than a crate.  Four hours really isn't that long of a drive.

    swamper

Dog seatbelts are great! My main car is a Cavalier, so my dogs are rarely crated when traveling. The dog seatbelts (you can buy at pet stores) snap right into the regular seatbelt, hook to a harness and keep the dog secure on the seat.

No swamper,  but the drive itself is almost 16 hours non stop, and because of my Tourette's and general difficulty of driving, I stop frequently.

I'm trying to look into dog seat belts....I think Jon has decided to dig in his heels and go "camping" with me in the event his dad won't let me stay around, because he (nor I) are comfortable with me driving 1000 miles by myself with both dogs, no medical records, and no cell phone

    • Gold Top Dog

Well camping sounds like a pretty good idea, hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Zeph, If you are still online, and if this would help... I'll contribute to putting Delphi in a reasonably priced kennel in NJ until Wednesday til the foster can get her. You can pay me back when you can or never. If you find a boarding kennel that works, I would need the name and phone number to contact them directly to arrange this for you.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this.

DH and I are in a similar rut - we wanted to move and start over but after seriously crunching numbers considering what he can make elsewhere and what we lose quitting our jobs here, we realized there is just no way to do this sort of move without making some huge sacrifice involving dogs, one I am not willing to make.

I have to wonder, where is Jon in all of this?  Is he sticking up for you?  I don't think it's fair that miscommunication between him and his parents is basically getting you thrown out and shipped back to WI.  He needs to stand up for you (you personally and you as a pair) and either smooth things over or come up with a viable alternative.
