First MLS test came back

    First MLS test came back

for one of the hounds I bred (from the first ever Ryngwrayth litter)that's had some back problems, and has a shortened toe...she's in a pet home, and she is N/N or normal/normal.

That is great news...we were so worried she'd come back affected or carrier. That bodes well for her dam Susie to be clear but all of my girls will be getting tested nonetheless. Tests like this, definative...are so nice to have!

    Thanks for letting me share!

wondering what MLS is? Here ya go! LINK

WOOOHOOO!!!!! Congrats!!! You should be sharing that with the rest of the forum...especially in the breeding thread!

I hope I am as lucky with my Atexia tests...Markie and Hannibals are away right now, it will take two LONG weeks to get them back. If markie is clear then I don't have to test Liberty as her mother was clear and then she would be clear by parentage. If Hannibal is clear then I have to test Faith who is Jackie and Polly's mother...fingers crossed for good results

Nonnie's came back today too...another N/N good news for those pups LOL.

eta: best of luck on good results for those tests, Jaime!

Gina, I'm glad it's good news!

Sorry to be thick...but what is MLS?

    Awesome news, Gina!!

This maybe dumb... but, I'm gonna ask anyway.  So, looking at the odds, would you breed to a dog that was a carrier, if your bitch was not?  Or will others?  And take the risk even though a fraction of the puppies could exhibit the disease?

Right now it seems that MLS is not common...not nearly like say Collie Eye Anomaly where carriers are actually NEEDED to avoid genetic bottlenecking and inbreeding, etc. The choice of nomal eyed is so small that it's simply not feasible.

With this NOT being common no...I would not use a carrier in a breeding I did. HOWEVER I would not fault anyone else that chose to PROVIDING they swab all the get and know their deal before placing them and TELL the folks rec'ing the dogs...what's what. You can swab pups that are in theory only weeks old..so there's never a reason for a puppy to go out "unknown"...I mean what's $50 per pup for that kind of certainty?

Some people probably won't test...or if they do...they won't tell. Until breeders start asking others, advertising their MLS status on their dogs..REQUIRING it to become a standard thing...some simply won't bother. I don't plan on using a stud or bitch in future without knowing....I'll even roll the $50 into the stud fee LOL.
