Ouch - update on the Maremma breeding

Well, I just spent an hour on the phone with Jacqui.

Talascio, as it turns out, is completely infertile.  She did have him tested during the summer but the results of this test were SO conclusive (and done by a canine reproductive specialist) that she thinks the original samples may have been confused.  When he was tested on Friday, there was just...nothing.  Unfortunately, Friday was also the optimum date to mate Vienna, Jacqui knew this because she had tests done every day for over a week to determine ovulation.

So, being the dedicated woman she is, she left the vet's office, threw both dogs in the back of the van, made a phone call, and tore 200 miles (Cambridge to Liverpool, Karen) across the country to the home of another male who was imported from Italy in the spring, to which she had breeding rights.  She couldn't borrow him, because even the most stable male Maremmas (and these 2 are, Tirino, the other male, is one of the males I spoke of in the aggression thread who lives with a fellow intact male) can't be put in an enclosed space with a bitch in heat unless you like breaking up dog fights, so she couldn't take him home with her in the van.

All hopes are pinned on this one, admittedly good, tie...we know Tirino is fertile, he sired a litter of puppies before leaving Italy.  If ever I needed good thoughts on the Maremma front, it's now.

wow that sucks about her dog. Did she look into why? Sometimes the right antibiotic can bring them back...if it's due to infection or such.

I am sending big time fertile vibes to the bitch.

I'm sure she will be looking into why, now that it's Monday and she can get back to the vet.  On Friday I think the "why" took a back seat to racing across the country to get Vienna mated.  The vet did seem pretty sure that he'd never been fertile, and that is borne up by the failed mating between Vienna and Talascio in early summer - 3 or 4 great ties and nothing happened there.  No doubt she will investigate, though.  She has let his breeder know, in Italy, and Agostino is being remarkably fair given that Talascio was never guaranteed, on paper, as a stud.  (Italians are a bit odd with things like that.)  He has 4 male puppies on the ground now that he's giving Jacqui her pick of, and in the spring he'll do another breeding to give her a bitch puppy that will line up nicely with the male one when both are old enough.

She is devastated, Talascio is an incredible dog and would very likely have sired some wonderful puppies both in temperament and looks.  Not much anyone can do about that now, though.

Oh wow Kate I hope this tie works!

and gracious Cambridge to Liverpool on a Friday - EEK!

She actually drove from northern Shropshire, where she lives, to Cambridge, where the vet is, to Liverpool...and back to Shropshire.  I didn't ask how many glasses of wine she had when she got home LOL.
