Suggestions

I'm new here, and haven't looked through all of the old posts to see if any of these were already listed. I have not seen this forum software anywhere else, so I'm going to assume it is a custom app written inhouse and can be modified.

  • There is a lot of empty space. For example the search bar on the top, to the left of that - unused space. The result of a lot of this unused space is that important content is pushed off of the screen forcing the user to scroll before they see anything of worth. Take a forum main post listing such as http://community.dog.com/forums/44.aspx?PageIndex=2&forumoptions=0:1:7:F:0.
  • In the same vein, in my opinion the to header bar is just too large in general. That dog collar image is humungous.
  • In the forum section, get rid of the Shortcuts and Popular Tags on the right. The shortcuts could be made a drop menu or some horizontal list further up the page. The popular tags can be moved to the bottom of the page, and spread the width of the page. This would allow more room for the following item:
  • A topic list, imo, should include the following information at minimum: topic title, original author name, number of responses, last response date, last responder name, and optionally the number of views. The biggest thing missing is the topic author.
  • Response time. Things seem pretty sluggish. It seems like most links I click from within this application have some lag time. Today is not as bad as I've seen it though.
  • Maybe I've missed the option for this but when I'm viewing the pictures list in my own profile, it would be nice to know immediately which ones have comments and which ones don't while looking at the thumbnail list.
  • Most modern forum software now allow you to hover over the topic title and get a tooltip which contains the first few sentences of the post. This is a nice feature that I'd love to see here. It helps me figure out if I actually want to click through on a post.

Being an ASP.NET developer myself I can appreciate the challenges of creating an application from scratch like this. I really like the site, and hope my suggestions are taken in the spirit they were meant. Keep up the good work!
