As for notifying us...esp by email? Are you serious? The forum has what 20THOUSAND members some of which do not post at all!

most forum software has a function where the admins can mass send an email to all members at once. wouldnt have been that hard to do. $0.02.

it's not the forum software, but it's a matter of if the server can handle that volume of mass email. not an easy thing to do.

i think for most an email notification wasn't necessary.. but at least some way of knowing what's going on. the old site was down from one day to the other. an announcement in the technical section was definately not enough. i have been to that section and there was practically nothing going on prior to the change, so i had no reason at all to keep checking back there periodically. even just some redirections from the old URL would have been fine.

i mean, if what DPU says is true, then even members that were aware of the upcoming change still didnt know the new URL... this attitude towards the members says: "we're changing things up, but we only TECHNICALLY tell you. you'll figure it out yourself..."

i do realize membership to this forum is free and is not a right but a privilage. but, heck, that doesnt mean i am happy about everything. if it wasnt for the i-dog community, which i like very much, i would leave in a heart beat. it's just not worth the trouble..

oh well... guess we gotta suck it up.. nothing we can do about it except right 1001 threads. (it's what we're good at anyways.. Wink)

ETA: i just realized i have over 1000 posts. now i'm pissed. my no. 1000 was probably another post complaining about the new idog... ergh... maybe it's a sign to shut up...

Sorry to be whining - I understand the mods in particular probably had no control over this - but in the future if major downtime or changes are expected, it would be really nice to have ever sub-forum include an: "Announcement: Dog.com is changing its forum software and will be experiencing downtime for an undetermined amount of time - please stay tuned for updates!" I'm sure there were reasons behind the changes, new look, software, etc. etc. etc. but it would be really nice to have made more of an effort to let the forum members know that their participation on the boards was/is valued.

That's all! This is still the proper place to give feedback on the forum, right? Wink

I think the most important problem was not having the old link automatically point to here when this new board came online. I saw the notice on the old board. I knew there were going to be updates, But for 2 days, the same link that that had always taken me to dog.com forums was broken.

There was NO way for us to know what to do. I finally remembered to try the business page Forum link and that worked. It was a mistake. A really big, awful mistake. But it happened. And this is what we're dealing with. It's not about how the board feels about its members or how important we are to them. They screwed up. If you check the files, you'll find they're human.

Secondly, the new board wasn't ready for this opening. I'm not sure why they opened it before it was functioning fully, or what happened behind the scenes, but it is clearly another mistake. They're working on it and improving things as fast as they can. I'm sure.

I think we need to keep posting problems as we come across them. It's not perfect, but with our patience and input, it can be really neat. It's a neat board. Let's give it a few days and see how it goes.

In the meantime, check out the profiles on my home page on my pets. Stick out tongue And write yours. It's fun. Check out the blogs. Pretend we're all testing the beta site, because we are! Smile

In the two years I have been a member here I have NEVER visited the techniqcal thread.  I would place a bet that 99% of the members here don't either.

I kind of feel the same way as you guys. As in MOST of you guys!  I wasted a lot of time trying to get on Idog...and I kept wasting more time going to dog.com and click on forums...only to have it take me to the same place.   I think they could have put a note or alert on dog.com to say the forums were in the process of being changed.  And I do think that they could have figured a way to let us know they were changing and to where.  It was kind of unfair to let all these people hanging. But,,,I think it pretty much means they don't care what we like,,,they didn't care if we made it here or not.  So the moral of that story is "like it or lump it!"   I'm going to give it a try...for a while.  Trying to work my way around...its hard for us "old folks!"

for anyone who thought they couldnt send out an email announcing the changes to the site.... i just got an email from dog.com announcing the changes to the site. a little late? yes. but it can be done.

Oh and the feedback link?  All my feedbacks failed to be delivered.  I don't know if that has been fixed yet or not.

I was also one of those that didn't know anything was going on and spent 3 days checking my bookmark to see if it was back up.

There are soooo many things about this new format that are not user friendly that I can not believe they rolled it out already.

I'm glad that they are working to resolve things as fast as they can, but I really do miss many of the old features from before.  When they changed the forum last time, a little over a year ago, I didn't like the changes at first but after surfing for just a little while, LOVED it!  This? Well it's been several days and I still don't like it.

I am not a fan of things like forums where dialogue is the main focus, to be a set width.  If I have a large screen, I want it to spread the width so I have to scroll less.  This restriction is one of the worst layout features of the site.

peuk - there is just too much JUNK on the board right now.  Having that column on the side which takes up half the screen for what?  Dumb things like who is most active?  The huge variations in fonts, too - particularly in that side column - yeck.  Not being able to see who started a thread - add my count to the YECK column.

There is very little incentive to wade through the formatting just to check out what is going on - the slow response time, the mangled views.  *sigh* - this is disappointing.  How can you stand being here for more than 10-15 minutes?  What's the secret to tolerating it?

I also hate not being able to see who started the thread.
