Archiving?

    Archiving?

On the other forums I belong to, after a thread is like a year or so old, it get's moved to the "archive".  This way it is still searchable, so if it contains valuable info it is still available, but the archive areas are locked so 2, 3, 4...year old threads cannot be bumped either accidentally or for spam.  I wonder if this is possible here?

Given how ... ahem ... *difficult* the search feature is on here I would hope they would NOT archive anything -- I've never been able to acess what was "archived" when the board changed several years ago.

I don't think it would matter, since the current search doesn't seem forum-specific or date-specific.  I would use Google to search this site.  It is far more accurate, you can sort by date, etc.

ETA: I believe when this forum was changed a few years back, it was to a totally new build/install of the forum.  That is why those threads are no longer searchable, but that is not what I am suggesting.  It's like if you replace the hard drive on your computer, the stuff that was on the old hard drive is not accessible (unless you do the work to copy it over).  What I'm suggesting is to add a sub-forum to this existing forum, and set the permissions so that normal users can view and search but not create threads or reply.

Did you ever get an answer to this? I see an idog ARCHIVE sub forum...did you mean that sort of thing? I would assume they could switch the permission on this to be unbumpable. Mods?

That archive was from when the forum switched from the old format to the "new" one - now 4 yrs old.
I believe the policy has always been that old threads can remain open in case someone DOES have the same issue/concern, even months and years later.  Not many folks take advantage of that, other than some spammers, or genuine folks who are shooed away when they're accused of being spammers.

Yeah has anyone ever legitimately bumped a 2+ year old thread that couldn't have been received the same as a new thread?  If such threads were archived they can still be searched and accessed so the information is still there.
