    Consolidated list of Forum Problems

Hey guys - Just wanted to post a thread to consolidate the current problems w/the Forum so they can be concisely reported to Terry in email.  I don't want him to get them in dribs and drabs, nor in long diatribes (like I tend to do,lol).

When you reply, please categorize the problem/concern/suggestion/wish if it's related to the Member's experience versus the Moderator experience.  If you want to just edit this post (like we do for the Naughty List) feel free.

So... just to get things started, see below (the "categories" can be changed of course, and the numbering is in no way indicative of level of importance, I just can't think efficiently right now! lol)

Forum Technical Problems for all users:

    1. Google Chrome - Paragraphs do not work and all content wraps together
    2. Google Chrome - Post editing options (font formatting, inserting pictures, etc) are all missing.
    3. Ignore Feature - you have to "Friend" someone you wish to Ignore!
    4. Search Feature - returns are not organized in any date or order (or any discernable order!!!)
    5. Spelling error in Edit Profile Settings hover message "abuot"   Fixed!
    6. Frequent "Ooops" messages after forum/site updates

    Moderator Technical Problems:

    1. Internet Explorer - we have to run in Compatibility Mode in order to activate our "Moderate" options button on each post.
    2. Thread-merging - Identifying the correct thread by Post Id often pulls old threads (different directory?)
    3. Manually approving each ID
    4. Locking thread failure
    5. "Edit" in blogs does not work within the forum, it requires intervention through the control panel which bogs the system and can take upwards of 4 hours to locate and edit the content of a blog.
    6. "Report Abuse" allows you to change the title of the thread, however when it comes into the AR forum, the title remains unchanged with default "Abuse Report".
    7. "Sticky" feature expires after 1 year
    8. "Sticky" feature fails to work on existing thread - it must be merged with a new thread and that new thread's "sticky" doesn't always supercede the original posts, making the merge and attempt to sticky ineffective.
    9. "Forum Rules" should be editable by us, lock against replies, but it needs to have a more permanent place that doesn't require a new sticky or "bump" post every few months - otherwise it drops from the default view for regular members because it's more than 2 months old.
    10. Default Display of msgs set to 2 months - could we extend that on certain forum sections (like Lani's suggestion about the Educational Archives.)
    11. "Moderate User" feature within control panel does nothing

Moderator Issues that require Admin Decision:

    1. Blogs - Who's Moderating?  Editing content is nearly impossible (both b/c the tech problems impede editing, and other logistics)
    2. Amending Forum Names - Training and Health in particular needs some changes to the sub-categories
    3. Policy on publicly naming Kennels (good or bad reviews)
    4. Policy on approving questionable usernames that do not contain clearly explicit, spam, drug or casino names, sales/advertising for shopping sites, etc.

    Wish Lists:

    1. Dog.com email address for the Moderators to use to contact Non-Members (ie, "quit creating 500 accounts", "your account has been disapproved because....";) - either that or an Admin who will send those messages.
    2. Emoticons - Current ones are crap
    3. Display username of Thread Started By
    4.

I'm sure we'll dig up more stuff that we've just forgotten about because we gave up hope of it ever being fixed! lol  I have an entire email folder dedicated to Moderating msgs, so I bet I'll find something in there this weekend. I just don't have the time/mental capacity for it until after tomorrow is done.

OK, bumping this to remind ourselves to get this completed and sent to Terry.  I know I thought of another thing and then forgot it...

OH!  The "Moderate User" that Terry brought up last week - it does nada!

Anybody else think of anything else?

    • Gold Top Dog

Gosh, I don't think I can add to it, but then again we've lived with these problems for so long, they are just The Norm now, and hard to remember, but... I think you got them all, Paige.  Great job!!  And THANK YOU!!!! :)

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh!!!! I do remember one! LOL

You cannot sticky an existing post.  It just doesn't work.  You have to create a new thread and then somehow merge it with the old one.  It's a PITA kind of a work-around.

bump, since Admin Jennifer & Alyssa requested the list today.  Amended the list to show the one Terry fixed, add the "oops" messages, and clarify what was meant when saying we need a dog.com email address from which we can send message to folks who are not yet Members in order to either explain why their ID was deleted, or request they stop trying to create a new ID every 2 hours, etc.  Clarified wording on editing the content of blogs, too.

Oh, and I also added that we have the option to change the title of "Abuse Reports", but it doesn't matter because it reverts right back to the default no matter what we type.

I wish we could do away with blogs.  This whole site has becoming a running community blog anyway.

I am going to say that I have resorted to banning repeat offenders - some clearly join to advertise and have no intention of being 'members' of the forum.  I don't think any of us has time to edit 6 posts, send a pm (that is ignored) and then edit more posts and eventually ban someone.

Additionally I will continue to disprove suspicious emails.  If any of them are 'real' people they will surely try again or contact admin.  IMHO that is an appropriate role for admin.

Sorry if I seem grumpy about this but since we are the ones on the front line and been here for years I believe we know more about the situation than the transient admin/market dept employees.

Well, somehow I doubt Jennyjackman is Jenny, since "her" email address says ross.wilson1982@gmail.com.... but I'm playing by the rules Lani says have been in place since I started (but I didn't realize were there):  Approve anything that isn't obviously spam, edit after the fact.  So, I'll be watching this one.  However, be aware that I will be at Nationals all day tomorrow and Wednesday.

My mom is still here through tomorrow evening and I have no access during the day on Wed.

Hope you are feeling better and that Nationals goes well
