Self moderation in threads

    Self moderation in threads

Has it become acceptable practice on the forum to allow self moderation in threads? In reading the thread about the dog who bit the child in the face I see many deleted posts and then Lani being called out for moderating.

This is unaaceptable practice and allowed to continue will only tear down relationships on the forum. If they know what they wrote was bad enough to remove and they are allowed to do this without getting dinged they will continue to exhibit this behavior which allows them to say what they want, get their words out and not get reprimanded for it.... that is not appropriate forum behavior!

Please do not allow this to be acceptable! I have received two e-mails. The first one drove me to the forum with the comment "It just feels... ridiculous." and a link.

The second includes this... "Lately some of the mods have been very vague about the current heirarchy of our beloved forum, and with what seems to be an obvious allegiance between two of the moderators, and no one mod holding higher power than another, it seems like there is serious need of some administrative intervention"

If you need some guidence I'm pretty sure you all know how to reach me for help. One of you is a friend on F/B with me, another has my cell number and all of you should know how to contact me.

Let me know if you need help, I'm here if you need me. Please take control of the forum and stop this insanity of self moderating.

    Thanks!

I'm sorry!! I know, I KNOW!!! I think we just wanted to relax a little and let people get back to how it was when you were Admin, Jaime, and I think in that I became too relaxed.... and now we have very spoiled little children running around.

It's totally my fault.  And I'm really sorry guys.  Jaime, how should we fix it?  What is your idea, should we make a note and put it in signed by all of us, or just step up the moderating without warning?

Jamie - I'm newest Mod and I didn't even think you were available on anything other than a personal basis, so I appreciate this offer for help.  We need it.  We've had about 6 different contacts at dog.com and have been doing what we can, within the express limits of the rules.

I didn't realize we should be stopping people from editing themselves - how do you even do that, since Edit is an option on every post??  In the past, some times direct msgs were given to members to edit themselves - came straight from the Mods!

We've got forum members thinking we edit TOO much.

Please forgive my ignorance on this, but I have no idea what more to give for information other than that Lani, Karen, and I are mods.  We don't really have a concrete Admin to refer anyone to, because that's changed repeatedly (most recently about 2 weeks ago, and that person doesn't have an account on the Forum.)  We know that Give Us Feedback goes to dog.com directly, so that's what we offered up.  (PS, which 2 of us have an allegiance?  I thought we were all on the same team?)

Anyway, I'm ready to take action on whatever direction I'm given.  Just need some clarification on what we're supposed to do if someone edits themselves.

I typed out a long response to this post but chose not to post it.  I chatted with Lani and she did her best to cool me down.

I may look at my response again later or tomorrow and then post a revised version.

Paige I am as clueless as you and will also agree that as far as I am concerned we don't have a 'line' to Jaime nor do I have any indication that is the line of command.

    That's all for now

They all left and created their own new forum, so I guess this place isn't so beloved.  Although they've maintained their profiles here to leave a goodbye thread of the butt-ends of their dogs, and yesterday Amanda added a siggie that gives the alternative lyrics to a current song called "F ** You"

    • Gold Top Dog

This isn't the first time Amanda has done this.  How many other forums has she created or jumped ship to join?  She left her account here open because she wants the option of coming back, like she has, over and over and over again.

Nice of her to edit herself like that.... last time she typed around the censor (she put the word "Sh*t" in her signature, she knows the rules, I was very annoyed, said do it again and she's suspended...) if she truly was done here, she'd have gone all out.  She doesn't want to burn that bridge, because the other forums don't work out.  This one may, after all they all but cloned idog (including the name!).  It seems they are recruiting off the board, sending PM's.  I think they need to be banned, this cannot be allowed. <-- Jaime will you please take the lead on this?

ALTHOUGH, no one at dog.com seems to care about this forum. We are have had technical issues with this format since Day 1, they've progressively gotten worse.  I'm beyond frustrated, in fact I think we all are, mainly for the same reason Gina quit, we have no support.  The functions don't work, leaving us between a rock and a hard place.  I've offered suggestions to the various admins we've been told to contact.... and here we are, 3 years later, same problems.

Between the "Ooops" messages that intermittently seem to be a problem and now we've had several complaints/questions asking if the forum is down because people can't access it (why? I don't know) and the million faulty functions.  Add in a lack of admin support for situation such as this last one... granted those witches were looking for a fight, the point being, we have been on our own, doing our best to hold this place together but I'm frustrated and verging on "over it".   For the sake of my own sanity and for the love of all the members on this forum we need help. I vote going back to the old format (the one the horse forum is on) and for you to come back, if just weekly check-ins, Jaime.

    Hello folks,

It isn't the first time it seemed like the forum went into self distruct mode. I've seen it several times over the last 7 years I've been involved and have been told of it happening when Jim owned the forum.

I am available for help if you need it. Lani and I spoke at length last week about what is going on. I know you guys have been handed off a few times with changes here. I am reaching out to offer my help and see if we can help you all gain some stability and feel relaxed. Doing the forum myself almost 24/7 I know how one can get burnt out and feel alone in a mass of complaints. Believe me I feel your pain!

Self moderation as I spoke with to Lani basically gives them the opportunity to say what they want and not get dinged. If they are removing it themselves they knew it was wrong from the start. Those people who are doing it on a consistant basis need to receive a warning. If you would like me to draft it I'd be happy to do so.

You can reach me on F/B as Jaime Nuckles, personal email astdog@aol.com or PM me here. I will warn you  the PM's go to the work email which I do not look at after 4:32 pm Friday until Monday 8am

Hang in there guys, you're doing a great job!

Jaime I appreciate you logging in and providing a way to contact you however this current situation is just a mess.  I don't' even know where to start.

Because I believe in friending the enemy I have access to the FB iDog info - there are some members very confused by the recent development of the new forum which overlapped quite a few members not being able to access this forum (myself included) because there were two url's - who knew there were two url's??????????????

So we've had serious technical issues (oops messages), a change of url (or not), plus a rogue group of long standing members teaming up to taunt and target the running of this forum - WITH NO SUPPORT OR BACK-UP.

Insane, insulting and ridiculous.  And I felt that your first post in this thread was also insulting.  Lani tried to convince me that I wasn't hearing it in the right tone - well having no contact with you ever before and having tried to contact you years ago when I began as a mod and not having those calls or messages answered I can only interpret your post as it reads.

I estimate we are reimbursed 83 cents a day to moderate - how many hours and how much aggravation is worth 83 cents a day?

We are professionals who are trying to do this properly out of pride and desire for this forum to be a fun and educational place for dog lovers but we need a whole lot more from dog.com in support and communication if anyone there cares about this remaining an active, fun and educational forum.  We three cannot be the only ones trying...............

Once again I appreciate your offer to contact you but at this point I am not sure what we do next.

Agreed - I've seen it happen in a big way 3 or 4 times in the 5 years I've been on the board.  Three of those times have strongly involved the person currently telling us to F off, who gets involved in creating new forums, etc.  Yet they keep coming back, and our doors remain open.  The fact they keep coming back tells me either we're doing something right, or something very wrong.

Meanwhile, the "mass of complaints" are tolerable because that's content we can control.  The system glitches we cannot, and we've lacked communication on the part of dog.com to even remotely address those problems with our members other than to say "we're told the info has been passed to Tech."  Then we don't know when/if it's been resolved.  It creates a strong environment of distrust.

OK, so, this person edited their entire original post away... self moderation?  How are we supposed to address this? http://forum.dog.com/forums/t/112925.aspx
