    Holy cow.....check out the tags

Had to laugh at this.......you know the tag thing on the home page.......just a couple of minutes ago it was this:

What the heck does that say about us.....lol
    • Gold Top Dog

haha roids and hooters....what a combo

    • Gold Top Dog

Yeah Snownose, that came about in just the past few days.  I wonder what recently changed here.  Its funny but it definitely does not look good for the company especially since it is displayed on the forum's homepage.

    • Gold Top Dog

Hard to believe it's a dog forum when you see all those.  I'm not sure "hot dog" counts as dog related info, does it? Huh?

    • Gold Top Dog

Well it's up to you guys what tags are being put into your posts. If we find this being abused we will be addressing it

    • Gold Top Dog

how are the tags different from signatures?  I don't get it...me too dumbConfused

    • Gold Top Dog

Amstaffy, I think you misunderstood........it was on the homepage.......I have no idea what application is used to place certain tags on the homepage, not in a post......I copied it from the homepage......and I was joking about it, if you read correctly, it said......what does that say about us....lol

    • Gold Top Dog

Tina....I had a post about it here or in Tech someplace.

Basically a tag is a keyword that will be displayed in a list. Clicking on the keyword will bring up all posts/threads where that keyword was used as a tag.

It is nice because if I were new to a forum and having problems with "housebreaking" I could click on that tag and instantly a bunch of posts would come up where that was being discussed. Some might not suit my needs but others doubtless would.

This is why it is important they be used properly and not abused. The only people hurt by such abuse are new members, those looking for pertinent information, and dog.com as a company as they're site would be being used for pranks as opposed to information.

Thank you for the explanation Rwbeagles.  I recently used the tag feature to look up a problem I was experiencing with one of my dogs at home.  It proved to be useful in the absence of a better Search function.  If you look into each categories' popular tags, they are mostly dog related issues.

Please, let me know how to get rid of "[Edit Tags]" at the bottom of my posts.

    • Gold Top Dog

That will stay...there is no way to get rid of it...it is there unless you use a tag and then the tag will be displayed along with I think, an "edit tags" feature. Sorry about that.

It is along the same lines as "report abuse" and "quick reply" it's there...for the duration. You should see the tags things only under your own posts....as a mod I see them under EVERY post, lol.

    • Gold Top Dog

    Thank you Rwbeagles.

So I am the only one that can see [Edit Tags] in my post and I confirmed that by signing off and then looking at my post.  I can see your tag "Filed under: , " in one of your post.  Is it not suppose to work that way?

Added:  Never mind once you use the [Edit Tags], it is for all to see.  As a moderator you see [Edit Tags] displayed on everyones if they don't use it.

So I am the only one that can see [Edit Tags] in my post

I think so. It was driving me crazy too and then I realized that I only saw it on my posts, so I assume everyone else sees it in their own posts too.

Regarding the tags referenced in this original post though, I guess I'm a little confused.  If those are all showing up on the opening page, then has someone actually "created" a tag for those topics?

    • Gold Top Dog

Ok, let me get this straight, we can enter the tags at the bottom of our post? If that is the case, I can see that some form of abuse could take place, by tagging certain words that are not , let's just say not appealing to the eyes, eh?

Yes and if I understand things, you can create a "Tag" name in Message form, at the bottom by putting in any word or you can edit [Edit Tag] on your posted message by clicking on it and dialogue box will appear.

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes...the poster of the post has control of what tags they enter and thus what "tags" are displayed in the listing of tags on the front page. I believe the LARGER fonted tags are the ones with the most "hits" or uses.

It IS a lot to trust folks with...tags. Which is why there is a note about their use at the top of this section. I personally, like tags as they make searching easy....but I also dislike how they have been abused for the amusement of some. I do not want to lose the feature altogether...esp in the absence of a "good" search option...so hopefully it will not become a common thing.

Mods can and will edit tags that are inappropriate for whatever reason...and flooding the tag list with unflattering things is not really a nice thing to saddle the mods with, on top of all the other things like the new blogs, we now have to watch, IMO. It is also silly in that, we can see who is using the tags and they thus...are easily found should they need a reminder on how/when to use tags.
